Challanged the C.O.R.E. exam today

As a new resident of B.C. in order to apply for a hunting license here I had to either take the Conservation outdoor recreation education course or challenge the exam even though I've had a hunting license for years in Alta.

I chose to study the book and challenge the exam and I passed - (71 out of 75 questions right).

I want to say that this is an excellent program covering all aspects of hunting - from outdoor survival, firearms handling, species identification and of course the game laws.

I can only hope that all provinces have something similar. If everyone (no exceptions) was required to take a similar program and in my opinion shoot well on a game sized target (deer) at a normal hunting range (say 100 M) in order to get a game license we would have very few slob hunters to put up with.

It is a sport that can really benefit from a good program like CORE. I also think the general public's perception of hunting would be a lot better if programs like this got public exposure.

All I can say is "Good job" BC wildlife federation.

Thanks for posting. I'm thinking of reading the manual and challenging the exam as well.

I am interested in hunting, but if I can pass the course by writing a challenge exam, I might be more inclined to go that route.

Do you all think I should take the course in person? Or just write the exam? It's another couple of hundred bucks that I could put to a couple of other courses that I am interested in taking (eg. Intro Pistols or a Bear Defense class).

If you have had hunting experience before I would just get the book and study and then challenge the exam. You will definitely need to study as there is a lot to learn. I would read it over and answer the questions at the end of each section. Wait a day or two and then read it again and answer the questions again. There's probably about 12 to 16 hours worth of reading to do. I would recommend you get the book at the library instead of shelling out 18 bucks to buy it if you wish to challenge the exam. Cost will be 60 bucks (30 bucks to BCWF and 30 to the instructor).

If you have no hunting experience then it's probably worth it to take the course and if you don't have a PAL then it's definitely worth it to take the course. The feedback you get from the instructor to your many questions will be invaluable. Good Luck!!

Had you taken a hunter ed course in Alberta? If so, you could have shown them your certification from your AB course and been good to go without taking the test.

No - I had hunting licenses in Alta long before the hunter education was a requirement, hence I was already grandfathered as a hunter and did not have to take hunter education.

The book makes for a decent wildlife reference, too! Easily worth the $20-$30.
It has footprint and scat diagrams in addition to photos of male and female species. It's not exhaustive, but it does cover many species that aren't huntable.
