Challenging Restricted Exam

I was surprised to hear it too. I had originally been signed up to do the restricted course at Colby, but as they could not give me a date when it would be held I signed up elsewhere. When I went into Shooters Choice to cancel and get my money back the guy at the counter told me that if I didn't take their course I couldn't shoot at their club.

I checked out their website and application form. Nowhere does it say that you have to do your RPAL through them, so I think the guy was full of BS.
You do have to take their "club level handgun safety course" and get a OFHA membership tho.

here is the link for the app form:

Well looks like my worrying wasn't necessary. I passed with 100% on the written and 94% on the practice (my finger slipped onto the trigger once.... whoops)

Now for the wait for all the paper work.

i challenged both one after the other, never handled a real pistol. Passed both with 95%, i read the books and watched youtube vids. the key is muzzle control and keeping your trigger finger off the trigger.

Im also thinking of challenging the 2 exams without the courses.

Going through the past couple threads, i noticed more practical than the theory.

How did you guys prepare for the theory?

I read the manual about 3 times. Then when I had to do the practical I just asked the instructor/tester if he would/could show me how to prove them safe before I had to. He said no problem, showed me how to open them up, remove the mag, told me to keep it pointing forward. Easy, easy stuff. I think the whole thing took about 45min (for written and practical).

You definitely have to read the book a few times to know rules, regulations, handling, operation, ballistics, bullets etc etc etc of your firearms

once you feel confident, you can go to http://www.gunexams.com/CFSC-CRFSC-PAL-Practice-Exams and take a free practice exam, or you can pay them for more thorough practice exams

I challenged both my PAL and RPAL back to back. Spent an afternoon reading both books through (RPAL book is 95% the same as the PAL so I skipped most of it) and then another practising some handling, going though the steps in the book to make sure I was doing it the way they wanted. Seemed to work for me, got 100% on both tests. You do need to know calibre, ballistics and transport/carry rules as well as general gun related things.

I challanged my pal about 5 years back and I'm going to challange the rpal in a couple weeks. Everying is in the books, but if you're really special then it doesn't hurt to take the courses. My instructor also let me play with the firearms to get myself familiar before the practical.

lol "really special" I dont think that really applies, if you never handled firearms or dont have someone to show you, its good to take the course

I did it but if I got other people into shooting, I would just show them with my guns what to expect on the practical and let them challenge it

Very simple - read the books, watch youtube videos to see how to PROVE a variety of guns safe (there is a Canadian company who posted a lot of videos of DA revolvers, SA revolvers, semi auto pistols, double barrels, pump, lever, etc)

Keep the gun pointed in the safest available direction and walk yourself through the steps of PROVE 1 by 1 if you are unsure, once you break it down in your head it's simple and after time it will become natural to go through the steps without thinking

Thanks for all the great info guys! and perhaps girls!

Can i get the manual online of do i have to purchase it.

btw im gonna try to do restricted first and then the regular firearms if that matters..... i dont think it should.

you can get manuals for 5 bucks each from most stores.
you HAVE to get the PAL before the RPAL, cant get RPAL 1st

i finished my test before the rest of the class by about 5 minutes. and all i did was handle the guns too.....im just that good :D and i got 99% i think

I spoke to the instructor. He is letting me do the RPAL exam first. But will only give me certificate after i pass the PAL exam afterwards.

I got 98% on the PAL 4 yrs ago. I challenged the RPAL last year and got 94%. It's a no-brainer. I lost on the lethal range for pistol rds & forgot to put the ATT slip in the gun case.

any reason for doing that?

Because im trying to get these exams done asap. This coming saturday is a RPAL course(full). I called the place and the instructor gave me the option to do the exam only since his class is full.

After this saturday, i couldnt find anyone giving a course or exam for RPAL. The next couple of weeks have plenty of PAL exams tho.... http://www.fqf.qc.ca/cours.php?region=16

Challenging Restricted Exam

I'm curious about why the constant reference to "challenging" the PAL or RPAL exams. On first hearing that the young lady at the local gun shop was "challenging" the exam, I assumed that she meant that she was challenging the necessity to actually take the exam and asking for a waiver as I did, but it turns out that she was simply taking the exam.
