Hello All. I have been chewing over the idea of making a chamber adaptor for my Alexander Henry .577-450 s.s. rifle to shoot black powder .45-70. making another extractor will be the easy part. I would like to here from anyone that has been down that road as where i live Bruce Bertram wants A$6 per case for .577-450. I am sure i saw an article on an adaptor for the Martini Henry but cant remember where. Any info is most welcome. Regards .45-90 Down Under:D

I have made a couple; one for .45 colt and one for 45-70. While I have know of one .45 auto adaptor that apparently shoots accurately, mine did not and would consider it a dubious choice. The 45-70 adaptor works well and is accurate but what is important is that you make a chamber cast to work from. The potential problem is that the 45-70 shell ends in the thin neck area and you can "ring" the insert with a hot load if the insert is not properly supported.
Local adaptors are made without extractors and you remove the adaptor and knock out the empty shell.

A few months ago I made a dozen of then, 4 each in .45 LC
.45 ACP and 45-70.
What I found was that in some guns the 45 ACP gave very good accuracy, and overall, the 45 LC worked well in most rifles.
The 45-70 inserts can only be shot with very light loads 10-13 grains, as the wall of the neck is only .010” to .015” thick, and would easily expand with heavier loads.
And there is no need to make another extractor you make the insert like a .577-450 case.
