Another post got me thinking: Is there a short cut wisdom to finding a rifle's;

a case and bullet fit,

and how to taylor handloads for your rifle's chamber size and throating?

(mine is a .308 Rem VS)

Just getting started.

"...short cut wisdom..." Nope. Not without buying guages anyway. You can adjust your OAL to get the bullet so its close to the rifling, but it's by trial and error. You can find the exact barrel diameter by slugging the bore, but jacketed bullets are .308" diameter, so it won't help much with a new rifle. Just follow your manual religiously and you'll be fine.

A guage like the Stoney Point OAL Gage will allow you to measure your rifles throat/lead for accurate oal measurements.
