Is there any "magic" involved in chambering, threading and fitting a barrel to an action, or can any gunsmith bassically get it right. I would like to put a new barrel on my hunting rifle. There are of course lots of people offering the service. I just wonder is this easy enough to do that any gunsmith could do it or is it an art. After I spend the money on barrel, action, stock etc... I would hate to have this part screwed up. Any sugestions for someone in Alberta or even Western Canada that has a reputation for precision builds and excellent quality work?
The magic is in what the person doing the work is capable of, how much he cares about what he is doing and whether it is something he is interested in doing.
Not to come off as a snob, but I only like to work on rifles that are to be extremely accurate, preferably at extreme long range, and preferably in bigger calibers.
I can and have built small caliber rifles for some clients.
My best advice in selecting the "right guy" for your work is to spend some time with him talking about what your expectations are, your budget is, your timeframe is and what parts you think you want to use.
The "right guy" will take the time to answer your questions, will tell you if some part you think you want is great or crap and will be honest with you about what chance there is of meeting your expectation.
There are many really good gunsmiths/gunmakers in Canda, the trick is finding 1 that you can work with to get what you want accomplished.
Time is also a factor, there is a fine line between getting a rifle built in reasonable time and taking forever. Most of the better gunmakers are very busy, the 1s that can do it while you wait are the 1s to be careful of. Gunmakers that are successful in their niche usually have a good following of repeat clients.
