Is there any "magic" involved in chambering, threading and fitting a barrel to an action, or can any gunsmith bassically get it right. I would like to put a new barrel on my hunting rifle. There are of course lots of people offering the service. I just wonder is this easy enough to do that any gunsmith could do it or is it an art. After I spend the money on barrel, action, stock etc... I would hate to have this part screwed up. Any sugestions for someone in Alberta or even Western Canada that has a reputation for precision builds and excellent quality work?

I would go to one with a good reputation for exactly the work you want performed. There are good and poor machinists and gunsmiths, and if you want it done right its not a foolproof job by any means. There are many steps involved, all of which require care and an eye for detail.

Not being a jerk but that is the same as saying "I have a guitar, I guess I can make a top selling album". There are of course many that do just that but a whole bunch more don't.

The process is straightforward. It is always the finer points that actually gets the results you want/expect. Lots more info in the Gunsmith forum on Benchrestcentral.com

Is it hard? Nope. Just careful set up, quality tools, and practise...

There is a great article over at 6mmBR.com where a UK shooter decided to build his own 1000yd BR rifle. Had some help from one of UK's top 'smiths to point him in the right direction.

He put together a rig that he set the UK 1k record with. The article is in one of the guns of the week.

I CANNOT recommend Guntech (Dennis Sorenson). Do not call him or discuss building a gun with him.

He is busy enough and I will likely have more work for him shortly.... ;-)

PS Mick McPhee also is a quality smith. Makes fine 30cal pipes too. There are others who are dealers on this board but because I have no first hand experience, cannot recommend.

The magic is in what the person doing the work is capable of, how much he cares about what he is doing and whether it is something he is interested in doing.
Not to come off as a snob, but I only like to work on rifles that are to be extremely accurate, preferably at extreme long range, and preferably in bigger calibers.
I can and have built small caliber rifles for some clients.
My best advice in selecting the "right guy" for your work is to spend some time with him talking about what your expectations are, your budget is, your timeframe is and what parts you think you want to use.
The "right guy" will take the time to answer your questions, will tell you if some part you think you want is great or crap and will be honest with you about what chance there is of meeting your expectation.
There are many really good gunsmiths/gunmakers in Canda, the trick is finding 1 that you can work with to get what you want accomplished.
Time is also a factor, there is a fine line between getting a rifle built in reasonable time and taking forever. Most of the better gunmakers are very busy, the 1s that can do it while you wait are the 1s to be careful of. Gunmakers that are successful in their niche usually have a good following of repeat clients.

I wouldnt use

:D

ATR....... They also are WAY too busy....haha...
:D

Actually, I am one of the smaller caliber clients.... Had a 2 customs built, 1 for me and 1 for a buddy..... I recieved a top notch rifle. Did I wait for it for a while... U bet. Was it worth the wait? U bet.....

Then I figured what the heck......Ricks always yickin about these .338LAI things.... Nows I got one of them too!!!!

I have nothing but good to say about ATR. I have friends that use Guntech and they are nothing but happy...... I am sure the more you read here, the better informed you will be, and you will get a feel for who you`d like to deal with....
