I was thinking of picking up a M7 remington in 260 and rechambering it to 6.5x55 what do you gun nutz think of this little project. Is there any worth while gain in bulistics

You would be better off to Ackley your 260. The 6.5x55 is just a bit long for a Remington M7 action, and would require you to seat your bullets deep in the case. This would negate any gains from the slightly larger capacity case. Regards, Eagleye.

I do believe the 260 is also thicker than the 6.5x55, requiring you to set the barrel back quite a ways.

Won't work!!!!

The conversion can not be done unless you want to buy a new barrel. The good part is the 260 is so close to the 6.5X55 balists wise, there's really no reason to change.
Enjoy Bill.

All you'd have to do is have a gunsmith set-back and re-chamber the barrel. It certainly CAN be done, but with a plain old factory barrel, why woulld you WANT to? It' is only going to mean you are feeding a different cartridge into a cheap factory barrel. Rather like putting makeup on Margret Thatcher ...If you're going to make that sort of a change do it right and have a proper after market match quality barrel installed with a proper match chamber. A proper match quality barrel - more than any other modification - will transform a rifle into a needle driver.

The 260 is too large at the shoulder to allow the conversion without a setback. The stock magazine is too short and lengthening the box and cutout would be more trouble (read money) than it's worth.
Going to the 260 AI should net you a solid 25 fps with careful loading. Regards, Bill.

Yep, just Ackley the the .260. That's what I do if you want more juice. Easy to do on factory barrels, but you still need a smith to do it right for headspace. Increase velocity, accuracy remains the same.

I have some F Class rifles with 260 Improved. Case capacity is the same as the 6.5 x55, when I use Winchester 308 cases. With 140 grian match bulelts and 30" barrels i get 2950 fps. About the same as a 6.5-284. It likes RL22, 4831SC and H1000.

This is also my experience with the 260 AI. With Vihtavuori N560, I reach 3000 with the 139 Lapua. Regards, Eagleye.
