There is talk with the recent CZ858, Swiss, and antiques reclassifications that the only way to repair this mess is to scrap and rebuild the firearms act. It looks like the CPC supports this and has the option on the table. (Click here for details)

This could be very good news for the firearms community as a whole, but what about the antiques?

Democracy is run by those who show up. Make your voice heard for the change of antiques law with the firearms act. Would you rather have a restrictive law drafted in 1998 that gives partial freedom, or would you rather participate in a new set of antique laws that give us the freedom to match the antiques laws in the US?

What I'm requesting and suggesting, taken from the letter writing campaign;

"With this redraft of the Firearms Act I respectfully request that you change the law governing antique firearms. I request that you change the law to include all firearms manufactured prior to 1899, of any caliber, of any action, and to include features such as internal or detachable magazines into antique status. This would streamline and increase trade of antique firearms with our biggest trading partner the United States as it would coincide with their laws. This would also stop the persecution of law abiding antique firearms owners and hobbyists, return the value of their collections, and free the owners from false charges for owning property that has been considered legal since 1998."

Mailed letters are far better than email. Mail in those letters folks. Meet with your MP, shake hands and get the word out. Finally donate to the firearms orgs the NFA and the CSSA.

If change is coming do your part to make sure it's beneficial.

Good work Loki!

I have 4 more letters going out today with specific reference to antique firearms. I am also sending a letter to the CSSA to make sure they do not forget antique regulations as they deal with the rifle reclassification issue. I would suggest that any members of the CSSA or NFA also write these orgs in addition to their MP's to make sure we show the problem extends beyond rifles.

If they do redo it we need to be carefull so they dont put a word in that screws up the USE part.
Be great to have all guns in the cartridges on that stupid no list.
But the wording will have to be watched.
The way it is now guys can use there guns in the bush. if the CPC follow englands antique rules that will end no shooting period.
So if we change lets make sure its for the better not worse.
This could be a great thing if its done right. it could be a nightmare if done wrong.
Lets make sure its done right and be sure to see any drafts of the new laws to do with antiques.
I think we need to find out WHO it is thats going to do it (if it happens)
Because when the Liberals did this no one knew it was happening.
We have a rare thing to have a CPC goverment rewriteing antique laws.
I will want to know who it is the CPC gets to draft this.
We need the law to be pre 1899.
Forget that idea floating around that everything 100 years old is now antique, theres no way there gona go with or for that idea.
if we just ask for what the USA has we should be fine. make sure the "use" part dont change or they add something we dont know about it can happen very easy.

Any idea on a time frame for this and did anyone hear this from and MPs lips that there going to do it for sure ? or is this gona drag out into the next ellection as a promise from the CPC to gun owners to change things ?

I want to be positive about change but when have we seen changes to the firearms act work in our favor.
other than mistakes by the liberals. (like leaveing a bunch of cartridges off the no list)

Does anyone have a link to the proposed or actual changes to Antique Regulations?

I would think Antique handguns is a much bigger issue numerically than Swissarms and CZ858 owners.

I wouldn't count on there being any changes to any part of the FA. Certainly not based on an Internet forum rumour. Harper has never said he'd do anything but close the long gun registry. No other changes have ever been mentioned.
By all means send letters, but make sure your spelling and grammar is correct. If you send a letter full of spelling and other errors, said letter will be disregarded and you'll make us all look like idiots.

As far as I know the antique laws in the Firearms Act and CC are both defined by the "Regulations Prescribing Antiques" which were brought in by the governor in council in 1998. I am asking in my letters for the "Regulations Prescribing Antiques" be repealed and only have the cut off date remain so collectors and police would easily be able to identify antiques and so those collectors reclassified into the restricted category as a result of interpretation would again fall under the antique regs. The use issue is not governed by the regulations.

I would expect Garry B to have a big role if any rewrite takes place

My guess would be it would turn into one of their election platforms to win gun owner's votes back. They did it last election and kept their promise to remove the LGR, so it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Just a thought but shouldn't you push for a moving date for antique status? Say 100 yrs old, date of manufacture?

that's a pipe dream, as every year new guns would be added to the list...guns that have the wrong "potential"

it's something I don't think we want either, because it would give "them" a reason to look at it every year.

getting in line with the US would leave a very specific list of firearms classed as antique. Easy to deal with from every angle, law enforcement included.

Agreed.

Full agreement. Asking to be in line with our closest neighbour is the most feasible goal.

For the record I do remember looking through on of the stickies in this forum and seeing that certain European countries have pre 1940 antique status or something of the sort, but I also don't think they get to use them and it's for collection only.

Us attempting to achieve pre-1899 of any caliber, of any action, and to include features such as internal or detachable magazines into antique status is the most likely to be accomplished. Of course as it's been pointed out we also want to keep the ability to use them as we have since 1998.

Everyone on this damn site need's to be watching everything closely and making their voices heard constantly.

This is the opportunity of a life time, don't screw it up by being lazy or complacent.

I would like to see all pre 1900 (1899 included) firearms regardless of caliber or configuration but will settle for pre 1899 as per the US.

I don't think it's prudent to even mention magazines etc as that opens another can of worms like the caliber bologna... :)

Working to see the following enacted into law!
Antique status shall be granted without exclusion to all firearms manufactured before December 31, 1899 regardless of caliber or configuration and as such will be deemed non-firearms

I think the mags were mentioned to get rid of the only single shot antique rifles B.S.
so i understand why he wants that in there.
Think about a nice winchester in 45 70 lever gun with antique status.
They call them tubes magazines so really its a good idea if were gona do this right lets include that to get rid of the stupid single shot rules on rifles.
Then theres the shotgun No list i want it gone to, if were gona open pandoras box lets get a good lick at this while its open :)
I have a 14 Ga side x side right now really the only shot gun i could find but id prefer a lever winchester 12 ga tube mag gun with antique status.

Antiques are firearms.

If the law is changed appropriately, only the two legit classifications will exist:

- Firearm

- Not a Firearm

Firearms have one characteristic in common - projectiles can kill.

It is the only characteristic worthy of note.

Either no firearm is legit for the use, carriage, and possession of the people of Canada - or all are legit.

It is immoral to restrict the law-abiding, in a vain attempt to affect the actions of the lawless.

The mention of magazines is for antique rifles. Rifles are currently not antique status if they have a magazine.

I realize that...my point is that configuration shouldn't matter so the mention of specific characteristics, like a magazine, would be moot.

We are of course putting the cart way ahead of the horse here...
