Change SKS to bolt-action?

If I wanted to convert my SKS to bolt action (also known as a straight pull) can I just simply remove the piston from the gas tube?

Anything else I need to be worried about?

Don't let Mark sell you a gas tube plug... The gas tube is not designed to take the force and will bend. Just take the piston out if you want to cycle the rifle by yourself. I let the gas system do it for me, I know, I'm a slob.

That sounds very permanent.

I just want to do some manual cycling for some test shooting. I want to save all of the brass.

I took the piston out of mine and put the tube back on for a few shots and had no problems. I think if I were going to shoot it as a straight pull bolt action on a regular basis I would make a plug that fits in the tube and sits just back of the vent holes. This would prevent powder residue from fouling the push pin. Just an idea that I will test in the future.

I think if you are doing it for test purposes, then ejecting under the "steam" of the normal semi auto action is necessary to see if whatever you are testing has an effect on that...

if you are just worried about losing the brass, I recommend just putting up a tarp or somthing to catch it all, seems like less of a hassel,
