I see alot of after market stuff for 870's. Changing the butt seems straight forward. Is there any special tool or proceedure requied to change the forearm ? Is it very difficult for a first timer at this.

I do have some skills but not what you'd call highly experienced.

A long flat screwdriver is all you need for the butt stock, the is a special tool for the forend but you can get by with needlenose pliers or a flat piece of steel just the right size.

It is easier to change the forend on the 870 if you have a proper 870 forend nut wrench. You can get them from Brownells or Midway.

You can make your own forend tool with an appropriately sized pipe and a file/hacksaw.

Ask around at your club or check the local shop maybe you can borrow a tool but if you've got some basic tools just make your own.
