Changing a .270 into a 7mm Mauser ?

I have just acquired a Winchester M70 chambered in .270win, and I am curious as to what would be involved if I chose to convert it to 7x57mm Mauser.

  • Would I only have to have a gunsmith change the barrel?
  • Or, in addition to a new barrel, would I also have to have modifications made to the receiver and/or bolt?

Shouldn't need anything but the barrel. Maybe a spacer in the mag well. Case head diameter is the same, so nothing needs doing to the bolt. The .270 case is .262" longer, so even a spacer may not be needed. OAL is good too. 2.900" for the 7mm, 3.200" for the .270. Mind you, you don't get much better performance out of the 7mm vs the .270. "I want one" is a great reason for doing it anyway.
 
I don't see the point of that rebareling unless that 270Win barrel is not accurate. Even in that case if you insist on 7mm caliber the 280 Rem would be better choice.
 
"I want one" is, of course. the reason.

I recently acquired a Ruger RSI International full-stock in 7x57mm, and I would like to have a second rifle chambered for the same round.
Unfortunately, although 7x57mm is very popular with Canadian hunters, it is decidedly unpopular with North American rifle manufacturers.
So, my choice is seems to be limited:

  • either buy a 7x57mm made by Zastava, which receives a lot of complaints by owners about quality, or
  • rebarrel something available and which I know that I like, like a new FN Winchester in .270
And since I have never had a rifle rebarreled or rechambered before, I came to this forum for help from the experts .. :)
 
Go for it. Actually, a long action might even be a bonus if you have a long throat on your barrel and need to seat the bullets way out.
