Changing a .270 into a 7mm Mauser ?

I have just acquired a Winchester M70 chambered in .270win, and I am curious as to what would be involved if I chose to convert it to 7x57mm Mauser.
I posted this question on the Gunsmithing forum but, with the exception of a comment from Sunray, I received no advice..

  • To convert a .270 into a 7x57mm, would I only have to have a gunsmith change the barrel?
  • Or, in addition to a new barrel, would I also have to have modifications made to the receiver and/or bolt?

The reason I'm asking is that recently I acquired a Ruger RSI International in 7x57mm and I'd like to have another rifle in the same calibre ..
and, except for Zastava, it seems that no manufacturers are selling rifles chambered in 7mm Mauser.

Agreed, I checked your post in gunsmithing, it appears sunray did the research for you and answered your question. Looks like a barrel change is all that's needed.

The performance of the two cartridges is so similar I don't see why you would want to do it, or if you gotta have a 7mm a .280 might make sense. But if you just WANT a 7x57 thats a good enough reason. :)

Yes i would have to agree, selling it would be the cheapest and fastest solution. Even if the flip from 270 to another 7x57 cost $200, that is still cheap compared to a new barrel, gunsmiths time, delay, and your own frustration.

And no guarantees that it will be right the first time or group worth a damn. Not all gunsmiths are equal and there's always the Murphy factor.

I have made more than my fair share of custom guns that make no sense to anyone but me... but, I have to agree with the above advice... if you really want a 7mm Mauser, and you should (one of my favorites), then you would be further ahead, selling the .270 and finding the Mauser in your preferred platform... cheaper, quicker, with fewer potential pitfalls.

Winchester had a M70 featherweight out last year in 7x57, I would see if you can pick one up and if so sell the .270.
Prophet river bought mine in and it came with very nice wood,
A fine choice is the 7x57.
I was lucky to get one of those also. Save yourself a lot of money and try to convince someone to sell theirs (not me), and flip your .270.

One notch in the "pro" column would be that you could request a particular leade on a custom job.
If you have no intention of shooting 175's out of it, no need for all that throat.

Just a thought.

Also you can choose your twist rate, rifling style, barrel length and contour etc. Plus it is tough to get a factory cut-rifled barrel that has the quality of Krieger, Bartlien, Rock Creek etc.
