I would like to change my 308 win to a 300 wsm. Is it as simple as machining out the bolt face, installing a new extractor, and screwing on a barrel?

On a Remington short action - NO.

A terrible idea and excessive cost...

Either the barrel needs to be changed or the present barrel rechambered, the bolt and extractor need to be altered or a new bolt purchased.

....and after that you now you have a single shot... at great expense you may or may not get the magazine altered successfully to feed those FUF's.

I was planning on altering the bolt, and buying a SS barrel from Gaillard. I also plan on buying my own reamer. I will not be performing the gunsmithing. I'm sure this is less expensive than buying a donor action. The internal magazine feeding problem will have to be sorted out afterwards.

Why do you need all that power? The .308 is a 600 yard rifle.
I wish to shoot moose at that range...

Perhaps find someone who can do the job and get a price first...

The magazine may never work, period. The action may be altered in trying, and never work for anything else either.

You can kill a moose with a .308 at 600 yards if you can place that shot in the heart or lungs. If you can't place that shot at 600 yards, you stand a good chance of wounding the moose with any caliber.

Why not just get a Savage heavy barrel (sporter barrel for that matter) and go hunting?

If not the WSM, the 300WM and 7RM will easily do the job and now you have a great action for all sorts of projects. I have a 7RM with side release d mag. Swapped in a SSS trigger and Micaluk muzzle brake. MOA or better out to 940yds. Plenty of horsepower for any grass eater at 600yds. I can spot my own shots.

I bet you can sell your Rem for what the savage will cost.

Where the heck are you hunting that you can SEE a moose 600 yards away, never mind shoot it?

I'll reserve any ethical observations about the idea of hunting at 600 yard to myself, as I have opinions on that subject, but maybe your a much much better shot then I am.

It isn't guntech that is shooting moose at 600 yards... I prefer mine within 100 yards of the truck. I have 600 feet of rope and a couple of pulleys..

rem 700 sa/300 WSM

You will have to open the bolt face and install a Sako extractor. I had one built 3 years ago and have had no problems with it. I can't remember what it cost but it was very reasonable. Mick Mcphee did the work.

Terry,

The more I think about this, the more I believe the prudent course here is to just buy a new rifle already chambered in 300 WSM. By the time you do all the conversion to your 308, you will have spent the cost of the new rifle anyway, perhaps more.

This is one case, pun intended, where you can have your cake and eat it too. Keep the 308, which is already a good rifle, spend less money, and end up with the 300 you want as well.

Let us know what you decide.
