Changing barrel from prohib to restricted?

Hi, I'm looking to see what is involved in switching the barrel/slide to change a semi-auto from a prohibited to restricted (not the disassembly smartasses...).

The legal side of things is what I'm looking for. My dad currently owns a S&W model 469 that is prohibited. I am trying to find a longer barrel/slide combination that will allow the gun to be restricted so that I can take it to the range and use it.

If I manage to the parts does the old 12(6) barrel need to be destroyed? That would make sense otherwise what's to stop people from switching it back. Any advice from those with experience would be greatly appreciated. Also if you know where to find a replacement barrel for the 469 that would be a big help too!

Any modification that would change the class of firearm would require verification. Good luck with that. If you are determined to change this gun, the best way would to have a gunsmith do the conversion and verification. "Bits of Pieces" comes to mind, but there are others. Yes, the barrel would have to be turned in or held by the gunsmith. Your question regarding switiching the barrel back is irrelevent - it's simply illegal to change class to prohibited - that's why you shouldn't do it.
 
There is no need to replace the slide, only the barrel as far as legality is concerned. It would look better if you could find a replacement slide to match the longer barrel, I guess.

I just had this "reverification" performed on a prohib. and it was no problem at all. Just find a gunsmith who is a "verifier" to do the verifying, after you acquire a 106+mm barrel.

I'm in process now of having a 4" revolver barrel extended to make it legally "restricted". Bits of Pieces is doing the work. I also agree with Jeff/1911 about not worrying about the slide; extending the barrel won't change the appearance very much.
 
You know, if you can find an extended slide - great! But I wouldn't let the search for this part hold me up if I was able to locate a barrel by itself.
 
You might be able to fit a 59 series slide to the 469 frame to get a longer slide. Though I don't know if there would be a gap between the frame and the end of the slide.

Even then the barrel will still protrude from the end of the slide as the 59 series barrel is 4" .
