Changing barrel lenght on a 329PD Revolver

I'm looking for a .44 Magnum to carry in bear country.
This, so far, looks like the best choice

Very light, so it won't bother me while I work, but still offers the protection of the .44 Magnum.

The problem is, this particular gun is only made with a 4" barrel. What would be the best solution? Forget about it and find another gun, Replace it with a longer scandium barrel (same material as the original) or replace it with any other barrel (maybe easier to find, but the gun will be heavier).

Does anyone knows how much changing the barrel for a longer one made of scandium could cost (roughly?) ?

I beleive the pistol has a steel sleeve in an aluminum/scandium alloy outer barrel. I could be wrong though.
 
Write or contact S&W 's custom shop. It might be easier and cheaper getting it the way you want, right from the factory. After you find out if you can get what you want ,it may be quicker/easier to go through some company ( like QUESTAR) to handle all the paper work.
 
it would be fairly easy if a 6" 329PD was available, then you would just chop it down.

Since they are only made in the very very evil 4" versions, unless we can convince S&W (or Lew Horton) to make a run of 4.25" guns, we are SOL
 
I was using one of those the last time I worked in Montana, very nice revolver, light and easy to pack. The "Lite-brite" front sight takes a little getting used to, but works well in dim light as advertised. I told my brother to pick me up one next gun show that he sees a deal at, and then I'll have to figure out how to modify it to meet Kanuckistan regs and bring it home. Damn liberals. - dan

Yeah, much easier. First I wanted to chop down a colt python (the blue 4" look good), but some threads here just convinced me a .44 would be better for the job. The 329 being so light must hurt when shooting hot loads, but I don't plan to use it that much. Will only be carried just in case.

I'll try to contact S&W PC and see if its possible and/or not too expensive to have a custom 106mm barrel.
