HI Guys

I have a pws upper that is piston driven. However the bcg is not compatible with a pdw stock that I have. Can I swap the bcg to any mil spec unit and attach the piston to it to make it work or would I have to get a piston driven bcg?

The piston attaches where the gas key normally attaches to the carrier so you should be able to swap it over. My PWS carrier looks the same as a DI carrier, only way to find out for sure would be to take some measurements or just try to swap it.
Don't forget to locktite the bolts and stake them.

Good luck

I don't think there is anything as low profile as the Syrac Ordinance piston kit - we carry the carbine version

That won't work with a PWS piston rifle unless you change out the forend as well. The gas system is built into the forend.
That is a conversion to swap from DI to piston and won't help him be able to use the PDW stock.

Funny that they didn't advertise the pdw stock on their site that does not require a proprietary bcg. It's about twice the price of a new bcg though

What PDW stock do you have? If it is the MVB ARC stock, it will not work with Gen 2 PWS Bolt Carriers, which have a smaller inside diameter than a mil-spec Carrier (more steel = more mass in the carrier). Oddly enough, my Gen 1 PWD Diablo Bolt Carrier accommodates the ARC system. Obviously, PWS changed the inner diameter of their Bolt Carrier between Gen 1 and Gen 2. You didn't say, but I'm betting you are running a Gen 2 PWS carbine. Check your Piston / Operating Rod - if your Piston Head comes off of the Operating Rod easily, then you have a Gen 2 PWS carbine and that's the problem. In that case, I would try a mil-spec Bolt Carrier - just swap out the Key for your PWS Op Rod as others have suggested, and you should be off to the races. You may need a heavier buffer however, as you will be reducing mass in the operating system by switching out the PWs Gen 2 Bolt Carrier for the lighter-weight mil-spec.

If you have the Maxim PDW stock (which also works with non-proprietary, mil-spec Bolt Carriers) you will have to try the same fix. The JP Silent Spring System used by the Maxim stock will not fit/work with the smaller inner diameter of a Gen 2 PWS Bolt Carrier. That said, there don't appear to be that many of the Maxim stocks in Canada, so I'd be surprised if you have one of those. My Maxim PWD stock is on a DD Mk18 and runs just fine thanks to the mil-spec Bolt Carrier.

The only other PDW stock that I am aware of which works with a non-proprietary Bolt Carrier is the Battle Arms VERT. The literature states that the VERT will only function with mil-spec bolt-carriers, so again the reduced inner diameter of the Gen 2 PWS Bolt Carrier would be a problem. You would have to perform the same swap to a mil-spec Carrier if you go with any of the 3 systems discussed thus far.

As you are no doubt aware, the NEA and Troy PDW stocks (including the new Troy Tomahawk) will not function with a piston rifle as they employ a proprietary Bolt Carrier with an integral, shortened Buffer. I wouldn't go down that road, as bolting the Gen 2 PWS Piston onto one of those proprietary Bolt Carriers could be asking for trouble. You would end up attempting to contain a full-length Piston-throw within a much shorter, custom Buffer Tube, which maY be bad for the firearm. I dunno, as I am not an engineer, nor do I play on on TV...

Best of luck in sorting out your current compatibility problem!
