changing caliber of sks

Indeed, methinks ramming a .311 or .310 projectile down a .308 pipe is silly dangerous, especially if one increases the case capacity.
 
I'm thinking you are going to have difficulty running 220 Russian or other sharp-shouldered round in a semi auto....fun project though. 6.5 Grendel would probably be the best bet, and a real sleeper to boot! :)
 
.220 Russian has the same taper as 7.62x39 as well as a similar shoulder angle, unlike the .22 PPC or 6mm PPC. I think it could work, but given the way an SKS tosses brass, I don't think I would want to try it.
