Is it possible to change the calibre on a savage 110 without much trouble? I'm interested in buying one in 270, what would be a good a cartrage to change to?

Why i'm asking that is because 270 has more recoil and was looking to change to something less.

depends on what your 270 bolt face I asked google:
220 Swift
6mm Remington
240 Weatherby Mag
257 Roberts
25-06 Remington
6.5x55 Swedish
270 Winchester
7x57 Mauser
7x64 Brenneke
280 Remington
30/06 Springfield
8mm Mauser
338/06 A Square
35 Whelen

Hmm, that really interesting! 6.5x55 is what I'm wanting for a deer rifle. What would a barrel cost?

A ready to install replacement barrel would likely be in the $500 range. Then there would be the gunsmithing costs, installation of sights, etc.

Would you know where I can get one made in 6.5x55? Looking around the interweb it seems to be not to hard to change the barrel, just need a barrel vice no-go gauges and new bolt head.

Adding that you don't have the barrel vise, or wrench or gauges... It probably would be cheaper to find something already chambered in 6.5

For example there is a LH Tikka T3 in 6.5x55 on GP, for 1000$.

well on a Savage 110 changing a barrel is not that hard, but you do need the proper wrench

you can use a padded vice to hold the action / barrel

once the barrel nut is loosened off the barrel is only hand tight

And for a lefty 110 it's not too expensive, there's one on town post that 500 for a 270 in regina, so I can save on shipping.
And if I want to keep it in 270 then no big expensive purchase for a barrel :)
I really wanted a 6.5x55 though. If I want to go the diy route then I could get the barrel that would be the best for what I wanted to shoot, a 22-24" sporter taper or so. I have a scope so that would save me money.

Savage 110 rifles are extremely easy to change cartridges, barrels, bolt heads etc. Go look at a few youtube videos on how to do it. Dirt simple. Give Mystic Precision on here an email, he can likely hook you up. Oh, and if you stick to North American brass you won't even have to change your bolt head. - dan

Sounds good! What do you mean by north american brass?

You might find there is more to it than the barrel. I believe the Savage 110 is "long action" if it handles 270 Win. So, an internal magazine has to have feed rails; a detachable magazine usually has cartridge stops and feed lips. No guarantee that I know of that a 6.5x55 cartridge will feed from a 270 Win mag, without some attention. May or may not be major or minor, but likely needs to be addressed - likely shoulder stops within the magazine well, if it is a fixed magazine - not sure if a detachable 270 mag can be or even needs to be altered for 6.5x55. For sure a "short action" like a Savage 10, will not easily accommodate those in-between sizes like 6.5x55 or 7x57 - longer than 243/308 and shorter than 270 / 30-06. Also bolt face sizing - a 6.5x55 has several thou larger diameter rim than does a 270 Win - no doubt enough "slop" in existing one that it will work, but you will not have the same amount of extra room for that rim. It has been some years since I owned one, but I think the Savage 110 were like a push feed style with a recessed bolt face, but I could be mistaken on that. The one I had was a variation - called the 112V, at the time.

The savage that I'm interested in is 270 winchester, not the mag version, it's also the older one 110 CL series J.

Here is a couple of photos from the ad.

Nice old gun, buy it, shoot it, enjoy it, until something comes along in 6.5 x 55. I doubt you will notice a big difference between a 6.5 and this 270. My two cents.
