I have a post 64 trapper with 16 inch barrel. I was wondering if I could take that barrel and put it on a nice pre 64 action. would it be easy enough to re-register it with the 16in instead of the 20in and how easy is it to make the change, that is if it is compatible?
thanks

Nope .... By strapping a barrel of less than 470mm (~18.5 inches) to an existing non-restricted firearm you'd be creating a prohibited weapon.

The barrels can possibly be switched and fit properly. Otherwise it may take a gunsmith and lathe to fit it. Why would you want to switch anyways...the stampings on the barrel would be wrong for the pre 64 action and you would just have 2 altered "shooters". The post with the short barrel may be worth more left as is than the 2 "altereds" put together.

If your thinkin about doing this because the pre=64 is shot-out, slip me a PM I have a as new 94 barrel F/S.

the post 64 has a little pitting on the reciever and I like the pre 64's better, the only reason I have a post 64 is because of the trapper model. the pre 64 trappers are kinda scarce;) I just wasn't shure if the barrels are compatable and how to do it. not sure if I will yet though.

In my experience, top eject barrels are very likely to fit with correct timing. Headspace would have to be checked. It is not particularly difficult to remove the barrel from a '94. They don't seem to be in as tight as on bolt action rifles, for example.
There is more to rebarrelling than just swapping the barrels. The entire forend assembly will be involved.
A pre-64 Model 64 would be worth a whole lot more unaltered, but you know that.

I have desided to leave it. for a 16in gun it is one of my best shooters and I would not want to alter that. thanks for the advise.
