Well, not yet...but today was the first time I not only SHOT an 17M2, but it was the debut outing of my first rifle chambered in 17M2~a Marlin917M2. Got it this week, BNIB, barrel stamped "North Haven CT" :):) and :) Judging by the sticky oil and hardened grease, this gun is most likely pre-'08 by a year or so. That's nothing more than a guess though...? Anyhow, I got to the job of giving it a good clean-up and getting the scope mounted~everything worked/fit as it should.

With the nasty weather plaguing S. Ontario for the last few days (and with no end in sight with this stormy weather en route) I decided to get this rifle-out today and get the scope zeroed at least. As expected, I got soaked getting TO my shooting shed oasis and even worse, walking through chest-high...dying wet weeds to set my target up 70 yards away..but nothing was to stand in the way of seeing what this 17M2 thing was all about. It took fewer than 10 shots to get the scope and the rifle looking in the same direction! :D Getting ahead of myself. First, the rifle wearing it's new scope, a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x40 AO~this baby; http://vortexcanada.net/products/riflescopes/crossfire2/crossfire2_4-12x40ao_bdc.html Rings~every image of this rifle I had googled seemed to show Weaver bases and indeed, it's drilled/tapped for them...but I decided to try a set of BKL rings on hand that would be a great match for this rifle and the dovetails the rifle also features. These are the rings; http://www.bkltech.com/BKL-1-Offset-Dovetail-Rings-p/bkl-274.htm and this is how the package ended-up;

On to the shooting~getting the scope zeroed was, mercifully, quick...which allowed my daughter and I to get some shooting in before the low temps and wet clothes started to get the better of us. She shoots off that pillow (pictured above, and lower for her) and I shoot of a Hoppe's "Expert" front rest, no rear bag. I started with a 1" dot and think it's not bad. (some of the shots are hers, won't tell which ones ;)) The trigger is a bit of a bear trap on this gun. Nice, crisp, but kind of brutal too. Going to give modifying/replacing that some thought. Anyhow, here it is...pretty well peppered;

After that, I realized it was shooting a little to the right, confirmed it with this group...made the scope adjustment;

After that...well, the groups seemed to just get better and better...just awesome! I consider myself to be an average shooter at best, so imagine my surprise seeing these groups unfold! With the paper targets getting wet, on some of these...I simply decided to shoot the 1/8" backer board and then try to hit the same hole with subsequent shots. Might do that more going forward, really cuts clean holes.

There you have it! I'm VERY pleased with how this rifle shoots, and indeed, impressed with 17M2 overall. I'm a little surprised that 17M2 doesn't get discussed more than it does but I guess it's kind of in that grey area between .22lr and .17HMR. The report is very HMR-like, only without the level of noise associated with HMR. I'd say it is CCI Stinger-like in volume but again, sounds more LIKE an HMR going off. If that makes sense. Really looking forward to some more trigger time with this rifle and I'm trying to figure out whether or not it would be cheaper to FLY out west to shoot gophers with it..or...import some to Ontario. :) This rifle just seems to cry-out for a job like that...need to try and nail-down some "gophering" opportunities for 2013!

So you found one! Excellent! And best of all, you shot it and found out that it is a keeper, before some CGN naysayer had a chance to tell you what a terrible mistake you made...

That is a cool little gun. Check out the Graybeard Outdoors and the Rimfire Central websites for lots of useful DIY info on trigger jobs and other homegrown improvements. A trigger job will increase your shooting pleasure immensely. I can already envision this thing wearing a Boyds Rimfire Hunter laminated stock...and it's not even my gun! Enjoy! Just think of it as a .177 pellet rifle, Ultra Mag version.

Welcome to the club. I have owned six 17mach2 rifles, and the cartridge is my favorite to take out to shoot ground squirrels. I actually sold my 17HMR, because I kept using the 17Mach2 instead.

Thanks for the replies guys....I need a trigger job, and I need gophers. Maybe not in that order. lol Yes, I did a little reading on DIY trigger jobs and see absolutely no reason I couldn't take that on...save for my complete lack of confidence altering parts I can't easily get replacements of. Looking at Rifle Basix...but reading a little more about all the options. As for the stock jjohnwm~I upgraded my Savage FV to a Boyd's and for some bizarre reason, I'm admiring it more than I'm shooting it...all paranoid that I'll ding it up! I know, ridiculous...they make a huge improvement. UnLIKE the Savage econo plastic stocks, the Marlin stock actually seems to work well with a scope, but really...a blotchy finishing job on some pretty ordinary-looking beech. (looks like beech to me) Anyhow... the rifle got a nice dose of TLC before heading back into the safe. I love .22lr, but boy...fun to shoot some super-fast rimfire again.

Fun caliber, terrible gun. If you'd like a deal on a parts 917M2 with a semi-functioning trigger and a sheared off POS flimsy mag retainer, just let me know.

Love the cartridge! I just bought another case of it the other day. I shoot it using the marlin 717 semi. Very accurate with a heavy barrel.

Can't figure-out whether you're selling a parts gun, or buying one..? http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?812158-Marlin-800-900-parts If it's that terrible, why the trouble? They're econo-rimfires, I'm reasonably sure of what I got for the asking price. Thanks for the warm sentiment though. :)

Because as you know 17m2 has basically been banished to obsolescence, leaving us to try and locate whatever we can on the secondary market for rifles. I really like the caliber, but my 917m2 will fire with the safety on if you give the trigger a good squeeze.
That worries me a little. I also can't load a magazine because the retainer clip failed.
Hopefully yours fares better though.

Replacing the trigger spring with one from a papermate pen is the single easiest trigger job you can do for that gun, and it takes pounds off the pull. The sear will smooth up with regular use.

I own six-4 still unfired. I find it still the ultimate gopher round as well as the 4 guys at work that bought rifles off me and with cabelas in town ammo supply isn't a problem-you'll enjoy it !!

Savage still lists 2. Both plastic stock/blued, one standard barrel weight...one heavy. (FV) All you gopher hunters better pipe-down a little too, especially since the thread starter has never had the opportunity to shoot one. :)

Looks like I may have to investigate. I just tried out my cz455 with the 22 mag barrel yesterday. Not like I need another gopher gun(hmr,wmr,223rem) but sounds interesting. Whats the drop/accuracy like at 100 yards
