Changing out the fore sight Smith & Wesson M&P9 and the M&P22

I have the Hi-Viz replacement slights for the above, and I wonder how hard it is to install them myself? I have a set of brass punches knock the sight loose, but the package says "some gunsmithing may be required". I did the same on my AR-15, but I had to do the modification on the foresight post and the notches to get it to fit in a flip up sight. I am assuming this would be to get it to fit in the dovetail.

I also don't have a dedicated gun vice, and I was wondering if I could use a Black & Decker workmate bench somehow.

Is anybody done this themselves and what was your experience like?
 
I did the same thing with my MP45 just recently.

It'll come off easy enough. Make sure you put a little bit of grease in the channel after the old one comes off and do a dry run. If you can get the new sight in about 1/2 way, it should go in the rest of the way just fine. Put some tape on the punch to avoid marring the surface of the new sight (ask me how I know).

If it doesn't go in 1/2 way relatively easily with a punch (like mine didn't), you may need to lightly sand the sides of the new sight a bit. That's what I had to do.

But it's worth the effort. Love the new sights and makes precision shooting easier
 
I installed the hi-viz set on my M&P and it was fairly painless. The base of the front sight needed some stoning to fit in the dovetail properly. Lots of good videos out there.

Changing out the front sights on my M&P 9 and the M&P 22 was simple and easy. Did you buy the correct sight in the first place? HiViz sells a different front sight for both because the dovetail front on the M&P 22 is not the same as the dovetail on the M&P FS. The rear dovetails are the same though. The HiViz part numbers are:

M&P FS: SW2014
M&P 22: MP2012

Cheapest place to buy these in Canada was at Al Flaherty's.

Yes, I got the right ones from Al's.

This is about what I thought. I hope I can fit some hard rubber blocks in my Workmate to hold them securely without damage. The videos show doing it on the complete gun, not the slide only. Is bending the lower edges in so they don't fit the rails a possibility?

You don't want to clamp the slide too tight because it is possible to deform the slide. I just used a roll of masking tape and both of mine came off pretty easy. I used a piece of Teflon dowel and a small hammer and worked without marking up the slide. Are both of your HiViz sights the new Litewave Technology design?

I didn't really think to take any but I'm sure there's some out thert. Getting the old sights out wasn't much of a problem, though the 9 mm one was a bit more difficult to drift out. Both sights were knocked out from the left and replaced from the right.

The M&P22 sights keyed in with no problem and it only takes tightening the set scews to lock them in. As per the directions after I get it sighted in I will use some mild Loctite on the set screws.

The M&P9 fit in the dovetail with no problem. They were easier to drift in than the original sights were to get out.

They make the front sights much more visible then the original ones and the $38 is well worth it. Especially in the 22 which were very hard to see in the range.
