changing the calibure ..legale?

im woundering say someone has a reg 22 semi auto if they take it to a gunsmith to take it from say a 22 lr to a 22 mag is it legale and still classidfied and non restriceted once the new cal is marked on the registration or would it be prohibited?

It's perfectly legal to change the chambering of a gun,some guns even come with multiple barrels that do just that.

22 mag barrel is different sized than 22lr, also they need to be stronger as most 22 mag's are copper plated not copper washed or pure lead. your bolt face would also need to be opened up.
