I have been grinding this question for the last few days and it is time to make a decision. My Visa card can't take it any more.

Chaparral SAA-$379 at Marstar.

Pietta SAA $399-$629 at Marstar

Vaquero SAA $599-$639 a few places.

The Good, Bad and the Ugly please. I am really thinking about picking up 2 of the Chaperrals but the old addage "you get what you pay for" keeps whispering in my ear.
I am a real rookie and value your imput and experiances with these firearms.

I had a stainless Pietta in 357mag, and it was an excellent gun. Very solid, well built and accurate. I bought it second hand and put 1000 rounds through it without issue. Also the trigger pull was very nice.

I can only comment on UBERTI and Ruger Vaquero. The Vaquero is the smoothest and heaviest of those I listed. Uberti is nice but the Vaquero line is my favorite.

Saying that have not heard anyone complain about PIETTA. I don't use hot loads in the Uberti. The Ruger takes either in stride.

Brickie,

I have 2 of the Chaparell .357 pistols and am very happy with them. Surprisingly accurate. Many times 4 or 5 bullet holes touching each other at 7m with 158grn cast bullets. Very nice revolvers.

I handled and shot all three before I settled on the Vaqueros. Chaparrals are a lot lighter, you can feel that right away. Pietta also makes the "Great Western I and II" for "EMF" and they were the SASS SAA of the year for 2008. They are more accurate repros than the Vaquero, if that matters to you. I decided on the Vaqueros due to its reputation for durabilaty and I was very pleased with them right out of the box.
Here are mine;

Whichever you choose I'm sure you'll get lot's of enjoyment out of em.

I found that the overall finish on the Pietta's I ended up with is enough nicer than the Chaparrals that I've seen that I was happy to have paid the extra money. I can't comment on the internal finishing of the Chaparral but again the Pietta's are as nicely made inside as my S&W revolvers.

And I went with the Pietta over the Rugers due to the new model Vaquero not being a faithful copy of the old stuff on the inside. But really that was a choice I made. The Rugers are fine guns as many happy owners will attest. I just wanted the traditional "4 click" action and to half #### the guns to load instead of the new stuff with the loading gate disconnect and transfer bar shenanigans.

I would get the Rugers if you are using them for CAS. Rugers are almost bullet proof, the Italian copies are fine if you shoot one handed, but if you #### with your off hand the force on parts will eventually break small pieces(the voice of experience here). Just my 2 cents worth.

I can't comment on the chaparral pistols but of the two chapparal rifles I have experience with one is ok and one has problems with the hammer falling forward. As for the Pietta I found the cylinder base pins to be very sensitive as to position. Other than that it works well and has a nice feel. But the Rugers... like previously mentioned they are indestructible. I shoot as much cowboy action as I can get to and have three rugers now, I plan on eventually having a set of the new vaqueros and a backup set of blackhawks. If you can afford it buy the Rugers, eventually you will end up with them anyways.
