Charge weight and IMR 4064 in 308win

I mostly use H4895 or IMR4895.....but this time I wanted to move out side the box and try some IMR 4064 with 168 Hornady.WELL then,now it became a bit of a coin toss.I have many loading manuals(pre and post lawyer)...the range of start and max loads are massively different from one manual to the next.
One manual has a start load of 38grs...max 41grs....and another has a start load of 40grs and a max of 45 grs

I did a bit of each....see where it takes me,but taking into factors of test rifles and componet differences,you would think the spread would not be that wide from one to another

feelings,thoughts......anyone???
 
If I find two sources that are quite different I'll look for a third, fourth, and maybe fifth set of data to see if I can find some sort of pattern.
I can't think of a time there was more than 1 outlier in a group of 4-5 data sets. I just ignore the outlier in those cases and usually average the others.

Going lower with powder charges is generally harmless unless you're at or below ~1/3 case volume with a slow burning, magnum powder.
 
I'm running 178-180 gr and have noticed quite a bit of difference between nosler and hornady. My suggestion would be use the data of the bullet manufacturer if available.
 
Can't comment on how it works with 168s but I tried it with 190 SMKs (sierra's loading manual lists 40.5 gr and 190smk as an accuracy load.)

Reduced to 39gr in military brass FL sized / trimmed 2.005"

MOA with frequent sub MOA groups at 1000m on steel at Springfield Range (just goes subsonic but still very stable.)

IMR 4064 is a good old school powder for M1 Garand loads as well. I find it meters very well in a Hornady Autocharge but like any stick powder is choppy as hell in a manual rotary meter powder measure (dillon sliding meter type may work better but YMMV.)
