Hello fellas,

I was planning on hunting rabbits with my cz457 in the fall, but based on a lot of videos I've been watching and other posts online it seemed like I should also pick up a single shot hinge-break 20ga shotgun, which I went out and purchased today brand new for 160 bucks. It was cheap enough I figured why not, I saw another post about someone saying they had misfires with almost all ammo types they tried to send through it and I'm hoping thats not the case for this one. Does anyone have any experience with this firearm? Should it do the trick? I picked up a box of birdshot as well with it.

My wife has an older 410 version of this, and it has an "interesting" system, where the trigger pull AND the firing pin are affected by the same screw. In other words, if you have a 10 lb trigger pull and turn it down to a really light pull weight, you'll immediately have misfires/light strikes. Turn it up, and you'll have a heavier trigger pull, but no misfire/light strikes. This was my experience anyways. YMMV.

Thanks for the info, wondering how heavy it is out of the box, I wont be able to shoot it for a while so itll be sitting in the box while I consider what to do with it, just need it to go bang and I'll be happy.
 
If I had to pick a single shot for huntung. I choose a H&R/NEF or Cooey 84/840.

Never had any issues with either.

Way I see it. If Im out in the woods, I want a gun that works. As bunnies may not harm me, but yotes, bears, and drunks oh my.

I was looking at an H&R Topper 20ga, as well as a Cooey 84 but I saw this for under 200 and figured it was a basic enough gun that it shouldn't cause me too many problems. Might have to do an exchange if I keep hearing more stories of it just being junk out of the box. There is always the chance I got one that works but I dont like taking gambles with things that involve firearms.
 
If you don't mind something used, keep an eye on Intersurplus....he has some cool single shots from Spain, Russia, Italy etc..my favourite is the Baikal IJ-17 aka IZH-17, from the Izhevsk arsenal. This is the one with the exposed hammer. Built like tanks, will last forever. And yes all the Cooeys are great.37/370, 84/840, etc.

I dont mind buying used I just wish I did slightly more research before heading out and instantly questioning what I just bought after getting it home haha, they had some much nicer ones for 500 or so price point but I thought screw it 160 is fine with me. Probably the last time I go for anything "cheap" just figured the hinge-break single shot action would be fine for something cheaper, definitely thought wrong but I feel like I should still do it the service of trying to send some rounds out of it at a range before really deciding what to do with it.

I wouldn't worry about it until you need to, and if it has light strikes, post back here. I'll walk you through the oh so difficult fix of turning one screw 1/2 a turn at a time.:LOL:

Your new. You don't always gotta jump at the first thing you see.. As often these guns come up for around 200$.
 
Sad to say it appears that the manufacturer is just using the name and a model number (Charles Daly and 101) that have been associated with quality for so many years.
 
I would like to add that when it's closed together it doesnt appear to have any gaps where the break is, and the firing pin does seem to be in the center, saw some pictures of other peoples 101's and they can have some gnarly gaps, and very obviously off center firing pins, the trigger pull is also pretty tight, doesn't seem light to me, so I will take it out and see how it does in the future.

Ill have to take that on the noggin in part with me not doing my research like I have for my two previous firearms purchases, wont be cheaping out again thats for sure. I was mainly just concerned about the gun being unsafe and unpredictable, if I can get some use out of it ill be happy at the price range, I just dont want to end up in an unsafe situation with a brand new gun.

Buddy of mine with a pretty large collection is convinced its gunna work fine most likely but said if not just bring it to a gunshow and do a trade with some cash. So theres another option for me at the end of the day.

Don't beat yourself up. We've all done it. I bought a Chiappa lever off the shelf because of the look. Worst POS ever. Yours may turn out just fine. There's been thousands of them sold under various names.

Be prepared for significant recoil though!
