CHAS 3-Gun Match July 20th

It was a good time yesterday!
Now I need to get out and shoot my AR at 200 and 300 to see where it is hitting. I just could not tell in the weeds yesterday if I was low or what.

How do you guys usually shoot pistol there? Is it on the 25/50 yard range? Can you only shoot from the one line?

Pistol can be on any range, but people generally shoot on the 25/50. Shooting has to be from the line unless you are alone or have a range deviation for an event. If there are other people present on the range, you must be on the line. That is how I understand our current range rules.

We run IDPA targets and a modified Vickers count scoring system.

The Down Zero is no penalty
Down 1 is a 3 second penalty
Down 3 is a 9 second penalty
Miss is a 15 second penalty
No shoot is a 20 second penalty

It was explained to me this way. Due to the longer times on the course in comparison to regular IDPA matches the penalties need to be higher to be effective.

For example 3 of the 4 stages at the last match had the best time over 150 seconds. A 1-5 second penalty is not very relevant compared to the total stage time and therefore you can aim less and miss more compared to a 1-5 second penalty on a 20 second stage.

That is exactly right. Most of our stages run in the 100+ seconds for the fastest guys. To run 1/2 second penalty multiplyers doesnt really penalize a guy for poor accuracy. Our club wants to focus on good hits and build speed from there. We try to build stages that promote shooting fundamentals, challenging positions, and some distance.

We aim for some practical application skill development combined with some gun gaming. In practicallity, you wouldnt walk past an engagement without making sure the "target" was hit and down right? If you hit a "civilian/no shoot" it would be a pretty bad thing so it is a pretty big penalty.

Overall, the penalties need to be proportionate to the stage length. It is a huge kick in the ball bag on a short run though!!!

Thanks for the explanation.

Do the stages take that much time because of the number of targets on each?

It is partly that we set up a large amount of targets with a high round count, and partly that we try to include some harder engagements that require the shooter to slow down and get the sight picture. Eg., the rifle stage had 1/2 size IPSC steel targets staged at 200m and 300m with limited round count to hit them. With misses being such a high penalty, people will invest the time to make the hits. Plus, I think the guys enjoy the challenge of hitting that far out when they get a chance too.

Stage 2 had a round count of:
30 - pistol
28 - carbine
8 - shotgun
(limited round count)

Our first stage:
22 - pistol
20 - shotgun
5 - slugs
(unlimited)

Stage 3:
Rifle 20 - with targets out to 300m
Pistol 20
(limited round count and many where running out with targets left standing)

Stage 4:
6 rifle - with targets at 100m, 200m, 300m. 1 round on each
6 rounds pistol after rifle.
Quick stage with transitions just to wrap up the day.

How do you find the time to reset targets, score and patch, with all these stages? How many shooters, shooting how many stages in how many hours in your day?

It's tough and everyone has to work.

I think if you look at the score sheets you would see that they shot 29 shooters through 4 stages in about 6-7 hours.

Yup. That was a big shoot for us with a bunch of the WRAS guys out. Usually we run about 20-25 guys through 3 stages in a 6-7 hour day. All the distance stuff is steel and we only have two ranges to set up on. This one was a nice exception because of Spruce Groves closure. If our club grows, our exec will discuss closing the entire range down for matches, but as of right now, we try to leave some of it open for the rest of the club to use.

What distances are the pistol engagements at? My cousin wants me to bring her out so she can try it. Just trying to figure out what I need to get her practicing on before the next match. Also, are those targets used for shotgun and rifle as well? How far are the slug shots? Is it ok for her to use reduced recoil shotgun ammo?

We generally run pistol at anywhere from 5m to 15m. Occasionally we will toss in something further, but not very often. Shot gun is usually about 7-35m with birdshot and slugs can be from 20-100m. I always run reduced recoil slugs. Doesn't make much difference so long as you know your point of aim. I hit all the way out to 100m with them no problem.

We don't shoot paper with the shotguns except for slugs, but even for those we try to stick to steel at distance.

It would be great to see you come out. We love to see people who have never tried it come out. Plenty of guys who will help out and make sure your cousin has a good experience.
