hey guys, im looking for a cheap .223 hunting rifle to go and put away some coyotes with. ive been checking the ee and came across a few but some were a bit more than i wanted to spend for a hunting rifle. so im looking for something cheap and something i can get even cheaper used. so im open to suggestions. a buddy of mine told me about the axis so im looking for one and hoping i can get one for a decent price. anything else i can keep my eyes open for?

H&R Handi with 24" heavy barrel, model # 72552... you can get one for around $260... and it can shoot... later on you can drop it into a Boyd's Sterling stock and have a nice little rifle... I have three in .223, .243 and .308;

Hey Uchi, your on the right track looking for an axis, for the money they are great. I bought one a couple years ago, modified the trigger to drop the weight and it is very accurate. other low cost rifles I can think of would be a TC Venture or Stevens 200.

thats a great looking gun, i love the color of the stock in the second picture. price is great too, thanks for the reply, im hitting a gun show tomorrow maybe ill get lucky and come across something similar

thanks, i looked at a couple stevens 200's in the ee but i wanna say they were 30 cals and if im not mistaken in ontario you cant hunt with any 30 cals

look in the regs and bylaws, only certain townships are .270 or under. where I am now I can shoot anything. I remember someone telling me that in fort erie for coyotes it needs to be a 22 cal or under, not sure if it is true tho. how is the merriton gun show? have not been there in a few years.

ill have to double check, if its 22 or under ill get one of those little .17hmr, those things are vicious

merriton is hit and miss, last time i went there people were out to lunch on prices, the selection was small and there was no ammo to be found, the time before i got some great deals on sks ammo and other items i picked up.

you need to be educated when you go there. theres a jackass selling swords claiming them to be high end swords and charging a premium, but ive got a friend whos a sword guru and hes openly told the guy the swords hes selling are cheap junk. the guy knows his stuff. also another guy thats always there in the far corner sells knives, he was trying to sell a guy a knife and pass it off as being really old. the guy told him hes a knife collector and restores them and that the knife was fairly new, 1/4 of the age he claimed it to be. so you just need to be wise about what youre after and know the prices on things. my buddy picked up a real old deactivated rifle there for 25 bucks. deal seemed good. some other guy was trying to sell an sks with a cheap stock on it and a red dot for more than an sks and those items are worth, tried to sell me a cheap nc star weaver mount light with a broken bulb for more than theyre worth.

like i said, you need to know what youre after and what its worth. for the msot part it isnt bad, im gonna lok for a hunting rifle this time out and maybe some reloading gear to add to my collection

im doing my hunting course march 9th so ill have all the info then, theres nothing that would make me happier than taking my 30-06 r700 out and laying a round into a pack of yotes. if the bullet didnt kill them the sound from the brake would likely cause them to have a heart attack, lol

Handi Rifles are a great option.

I have an axis and a tc venture. If you can swing the extra cash the venture is IMO much better made. That said the axis works, and works well. I just like the action of the venture much better.

good to know thanks, i didnt come across anything at the show, lots of guns, all of them seemed to be on the high end of the price, so ill just save some pennies and buy something a little better
