Just looking for a semi auto but don't want to spend $1000.

As of right now I am leaning towards the Mossberg 930. I already use a Mossberg 500 and the feel is similar, and I like that. It is also a great price at $520 for a 26 inch vent rib + 24 inch deer barrel.

I have looked at the Stoeger 2000, and there are some good deals to be had but I think I like the benefit of a gas system for taming recoil. Gun I was looking at was a field/deer combo for $620

That said I was loking at the Weatherby SA 08 and it feels really nice. I have read some good reviews, but want to know what you guys think. $529 for the 28 inch synthetic.

The other option is the Remington 11-87 and while it has been around awhile, I really have had some bad Remington experience with their warranty centre and with the reports of QC on their products as of late I am not convinced that the higher price is worth it. $699 for the 28 inch synthetic at Bass pro, but havent looked much.

Now just to throw a monkey wrench into the mix has anyone heard of the H&R Excell?????? The price is out of this world but can't find too much info.

Thanks for any advice
Mark

I have owned and shot all 4.
The mossberg 930 is the only one I still own, and I abuse it. As long as you feed it 3 dram loads for the first say 10 flats it will be able to digest anything. I have got my limit in ducks and then gone and shot a 98 in skeet the same day. Keep it clean and it wont fail. It is my only gun that hasn't failed me in the blind.

my vote = 930

I hoisted all of those guns but ended up buying a mossberg. It was a 935 instead of the 930 (which was my first choice) because it was on sale at Cabelas. I didn't like that you had to push another switch on the sa-08 to get the bolt to lock open and it didn't feel solid to me or mount as well. My 935 came with stock shims so I was able to drop the comb by 1/4" which made it perfect for me. Haven't shot it yet though and they apparently need a fair amount of recoil to cycle properly so 2 3/4" shells won't cycle. The 930 would solve that problem for you.

the SMART guys get a REMINGTON 1100 and stick an AFTER MARKET BARREL on it or GET IT OPENED UP - if you want to use LARGER than n0 2 steel- you USED to see nothing but 1100s on the t&s circut

I notice the Mossberg 930 generally get very positive reviews.....particularly when clay shooting may also be among the list of activities. A friend owns a 935 that he also uses for Trap and I personally haven't witnessed any problems although I am not sure how the 935 may function during SC or Skeet session.

The new Stoeger M3500 (inertia driven as well) looks well finished.

I have an 1187, my wife has a 930 in walnut and I bought my dad a 930 synthetic. I bought the 1187 because it fit me a lot better right off the shelf. All 3 guns have been fine but I kind of give the edge to the 930. It seems (to me)they aren't quite as picky about having to be cleaned as often as the 1187. But I don't mind cleaning my guns so it isn't an issue with me. The 1187 is heavier which is good for shooting heavy waterfowl loads. I don't carry it in the field, for that I use a sxs or o/u. I can't comment on the other guns you mentioned but for the price, I think the 930 is hard to beat.

baikal is a nice reliable and cheap semi... I love mine

X2.

Get a MP153 or SPR453 (if you can still find) eat anything you feed and has a 3.5" chamber if that matter.

I've never owned a semi, but I've been thinking about all these cheap guns being discussed here. So far that Baikal has my full attention :)
Thanks for sharing your experiences, as I am quietly benefiting here!
My friend has an older Browning semi which he absolutely loves...

Well with some good reviews here, and a whole bunch on the interweb I decided to go with the Mossberg 930.

$590 tax in for a 26 inch ported waterfowl barrel, and a 24 inch rifled slug barrel with fibre optic sights just so happens to be the best deal around!

Anyways hope it is here before next wednesday as I have the day off so I will give you guys a review for sure.

Thanks
Mark
