looking for a 30-06 for coyote hunting and target shooting at long ranges. i know what everyone is thinking right now,
1) wrong topic, try hunting
a)well i want it to be accurate so i thought this would be best

2)what the hell! thats a little powerful for a coyote!!!!
a)i dont like making second shots lol

if anyone could help that would be great!\

thanks!

Accuracy trumps everything. Just about every centre fire caliber from 243 up has the power to take out yotes.

If you want accuracy and adequate power, i would go with 243 or 260 Rem over a 30-06.

My FClass targetrifle (up to 1000 yards) is a 260Rem Improved in a single shot Savage.

you want cheap .....

goto tradexcanada.com , and look at the 6.5x55's they have . cheap , accurate , deadly .

and if your still wanting a 30-06 , they have them too , just not as cheap as the 6.5x55's

Velocity is your friend for varmint hunting. 6.5X55 is a reasonable alternative, or I would suggest a 22-250. A 308 will basically do everything a 30-06 will do, and unless you are using really light bullets you don't enjopy the flat-shooting benefits of a true varmint cartridge.

In a nutshell, I think a 30-06 for coyotes will achieve nothing except to burn more powder.

If you are looking for the cheapest rifle that offers decent quality, I think a Stevens fits the bill quite nicely. I'm not saying they are the greatest, or anywhere near perfect, but a solid rifle for $350 approx.

Remember that there are several types of "cheap rifle" ;) :

(1) rifles that are initially cheap, but require expensive work/upgrades,

(2) rifles that may not have large expenses themselves, but require expensive ammunition,

(3) rifles that actually do have a high "value proposition" (good junction of price & quality).

What's your definition of 'target' shooting and what's your definition of 'long range'?

Are we talking benchrest my-grouping-is-0.02-inches-smaller-then-yours accurate? Or more along the lines of minute of gopher?

And for long range, are we talking like 600 meters out? 1200? 2000?

In Nova Scotia I'd think 300 meters would be long distance. I've only handled the Thompson Center Venture at a gun store and thought it was a nice gun too.

well i would be using m.o.a and i want the rifle to ba accurate. i will get the 30-06 because i want to use it for deer coyotes and that kind of thing. range i would be going from 200 to 800 yards and for targets 500 yards and out i would mainly be shooting steel and some paper for grouping and less then 500 i would be shooting paper and milk jugs full of water to ammuse my drunk uncles lol

Try Toz-122 ellwood epps has them for $439.00 it is 308 the rifle is a tank. For that price it is a steal

Good rifle

I bought a Mossberg 4X4 from Frontier Firearms. Cost me 500 with scope. I changed the scope on it, but it's a 3X9 that would be OK for hunting. Mine's a 300 Win. Mag, but i'm pretty sure it's available in '06. It regularly groups around 1" or less at 100. The only issue with it is that it's a sporter barrel and heats up after 3 shots. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. If you're doing target and bush puppies, why do you want a 30-06, though? Something like a .243 is plenty strong, a lot cheaper to reload for, and has less recoil.

Sounds like you want plug and play.

In that case, Tikka T3 in 260, 6.5X55, 7-08, or 308. There is no real need for the 30-06 based on your description.

If you don't mind a bit of tweaking, any Savage that has the stock and chambering that floats your boat. There are several heavy barreled fluted rifles that may fit your needs nicely.

One size fits all is not ideal but you can get a compromise of some sort.

Personally, I would spend more for a paper punching, LR shooter AND a few dollars for a generic hunting rifle. You end up with two better tools.

I couldn't agree more. More deer have been taken on this continent with 4-5MOA 30-30 lever guns than almost any other rifle.

If you're loking for real cheap.... Cabela's Ca. has the Mossberg 100 ATR for sale at $299.00. Several calibres available. I Believe the sale is over on Nov 5.

I would not, under any circumstances whatsoever, buy a Mossberg ATR "Nighttrain". See this thread:

I believe there have been several injuries because of this bolt design.
