So far im 5 for 5 ( knock on wood ) using my Rem710 7mm using 150gr rem core lokt bullets. All deer either dropped on the spot, one bigger buck went maybe 15 yards.

Entry and exit holes were the same, a rather large 1.5 inch hole.
This buck was about to run down a steep hill and only had a shot at his neck through DEEP hardwoods.
Made a good shot, jumped up into the air and rolled down the hill about 15 feet.

Moral of the story, still impressed by my Rem710 till this day and those Core Lokt Bullets are great. :shotgun:

**Yes the buck was tagged right after these pics !

Well done and nice eater. Remmy Core lokts are fine rounds for delicate thin skinned game such as whitetails. Never had them shoot better than 1 MOA with my rifles but good enough for average deer hunting.

IMO much of the high end fodder produced these days are designed to attract hunters more than anything with fancy packaging and fantastic claims. High end stuff keeps us handloaders on our toes though

I don't believe those Core-lokts are expensive enough to drop a deer on the spot, next year, better use something more expensive.........congrats on the nice deer!!

Core-locks are all I am ever going to buy. They mushroom perfectly and hold together all the way through a moose. 150 gr. 30-06 at 300 yards. No use spending your hard earned money on anything else. They also blow big holes in deer.

every shot i\ve ever seen with the 7mm has had excesive damage...why? I've killed lots with a 243 to a 300 wby mag and never had the damage of the 7 mm..

having said that ...congrats..

165 grain .280 Corelokt was what I shot my cow moose with. Hit her mid-neck and had to toss the nearly whole neck when I butchered her. Massive damage and bone chips and bloodshot meat everywhere. Of course I hit her at 35 yards or so.

how do they hold up at 30 yards when they hit the shoulder? :)

I have to agree the 7mm does leave some excessive damage, last year one doe I shot had a HUGE exit hole and 5 feet of intestines outside of the body when I walked up to it ! Made gutting alot easier, almost did the job for me ;)

Good question. My bullet never exited despite my earlier post on another thread where I thought it did. BUT I never found a trace of the bullet, despite hacking the neck to pieces looking for it (I didn't obsess about it mind you). If that holds true, I can see where a shoulder joint hit would lead to a non-immediately fatal hit and a ####ty day of tracking.

nice deer. I am relieved to see this because I have been led by the media to believe that all firearms in southern ontario are used to commit drivebys and gang shootings. I guess you didn't know that you could have traded your gun for a digital camera recently in Toronto.

congrats on a successful hunt!

That's why I shoot everything with 180's out of my .30-06 (Winchester Power Points...pretty well same kind of bullet). It left a big 2 inch exit hole on a buck. I've seen two of my bud's moose go down with the same ammo in .30-06 as well. Great terminal performance that's been around for a very long time and just plain works. Use enough bullet weight and enough caliber/ cartridge in a traditional copper covered lead core bullet and it will do the job even in less than ideal conditions.

I'm not wasting my money on a premium bullet for whitetail. I used Hornady interlock jacketed bullets on my 308 and every one dropped a deer with the first shot and passed through. Anything fancier would be a waste of money and produce no better results.

Just how many shots does it take to kill a whitetail? Is the $1 it cost me in premium bullets last year really that big of a waste?

True, but I'm pretty sure that most of us here shoot more at the range than in the field. The $1 per bullet applies there as well.

I personally don't want to bother with two loads in a caliber that does well with the old style cup/core bullets.
