Cheap, but reliable .22 revolver?

What are people's thoughts on the S&W 17 vs S&W 617?

A newer Model 617 is likely to have a 10-round cylinder, which is a convenience in terms of re-loading and a longer firing relay. However, the added flutes and notches are not a classic look (and neither is the stainless steel, in my opinion). They do still make the classic 6-shot blued, called the Model 17 Masterpiece, but it's more expensive and scarcer.

My preference is for older things in almost any situation, but I collect. I've never heard anyone complain about their new 617, however.

Buy what you can get when you can get it if it looks good to you and you have the money. Epps just got a batch of 617s in, and looks like they've almost sold out in three days at just under $900.

A High Standard 9 shot Sentinel is not a bad choice, and can be had at a reasonable price ($300-$400). H&R made a series of 9 shot revolvers that again, can be had at a reasonable price (less than $500). None, are equal to a Smith for sure, but worth looking at.

My recommendation is a S&W 17, in the $600 range price wise, or if you can afford it, a 617 which is in the $1000 price range .

P.S. Have owned a Sentinel, have a H&R 999, and a Smith 17.
