Cheap Coyote Rig

Intersurplus has lots of 96 mausers in 6.5 x55. If you reload, these are unbeatable in both value and versatility.
Can’t say I’m much of a fan of the surplus mausers. I did have a R700 Classic in 6.5Sw, one of those should never of sold it ones..

While I have a M96 and a M38; both are military in original military configuration. Both are accurate as can be with bores that look like new. The M96 was built in 1900 in Obendorf and has the most amazing trigger I have ever seen on a Military Mauser.

My hunting rifle in 6.5 x 55 is actually a Zastava I bought new; a modern 98 Mauser. All three are never sells for me.

For an economical sporter, the surplus "sporters" are hard to beat. I have an older one, from Intersurplus, a Husqvarna commercial Mauser in 9.3 x 62 and it is a great shooter also.

Most of those older used surplus rifles will out last the new ones, and outshoot them too. The controlled feed is just not available unless you spend a lot of money on a new rifle. Even the old 96 Mausers are controlled feed.

Thoughts, suggestions on a cheap used factory Coyote rig? I’m not up on current entry level rifles.

- 783
- Patriot
- Axis II

Nothing fancy, but robust.

- magazine/clip not req’d.
- 20” length (or there-bouts).
- Decent MOC (minute of Coyote) accuracy etc.

What say CGN?
cartridge choice is as important as the platform imo,
9.3 isn't it )

It is. I’ve been down at 204R and up to .243win when i was seriously active. 6.5Cm was just blossoming and not a lot of ppl were jumping on it then. Currently thinking .223 to take advantage of cheap 55gr ammo, but not limited to any of the others I have used in the past.

Far as caliber goes, 223 can be bought the cheapest but if you want some sort of decent accuracy you borderline have to use "premium" ammo. I have yet to have a bolt 223 shoot "bulk" HP or FMJ ammo any better than 2" at 100 yards. Now thats minute of coyote for sure at that distance but at longer (200+ yards) ranges that might play a factor in hit or miss. And decent 223 ammo now is insane, I bought a box of Nosler Varmageddon in 223 the other day and it was $66 tax in *puke*

Id look for 22-250 or 243 personally. 243 is a laser with 58-75gr bullets and decent ammo is the same price as decent 223 ammo and you get better performance out of it. And depending where you are, if its a legal caliber, you might be able to use the 243 for deer down the road should you want to. Some places you cant use 223 for deer.

Id probably look for a used Savage 11. They do pop up every now and again for like $450 with a cheap scope and theyre 10x the rifle an Axis or Ruger American are imo. Another good option would be a Winchester XPR, buddy has one in 243 and ive had the pleasure of shooting it and doing load development for him and I was impressed.

you mention wanting to use hevier for caliber, Campro also has bulk 62 gr also @~.$0.20
I have a bag to test but not done to date

As far as a rifle goes, take a look maybe at a Howa, either Mini 1500 or std 1500 shrt action, you might be surprised
PR has a few options
my 20" hb shoots under an 1" @100 with several reloads, have never shot factory ammo to compare

Find a lightly used CZ 557 in 243. Every bit as good and accurate as Tikka T3, but with a European flair, and nice Turkish walnut. Look for something with a 20 inch barrel and optional open sights for added versatility. You can probably score one for under $1000.

Otherwise, you can probably find a mildly used Ruger M77 tang safety (MK1) in 220 Swift, 22-250, 25-06, 6mm Rem, etc. Well built rifles that can be had for under $1000 if you look around. The 220 Swift in the heavy barrel model is a tack driver.

I bought an Axis 2 in .223 REM in that Strata camo they offered for $400.00 from Cabelas Calgary. That damn gun shoots 5 rounds into smaller than dime size groups with my reloads! I normally try to keep my distance from cheap guns but I gave it a chance after a dismal performance from a Ruger American, and I have grown attached to it.View attachment 874365
Quite the sale for $400!

Is that really a Steven's quality item.

Is the Turkish import really worthy of the Steven's name ?
Hey David,

Those Savage Stevens Model 334 rifles are made by Turqua.

They are a no frills version of the fancier deluxe models of Turqua.

https://www.ataarms.com/en/products/turqua.html?Category=1

I use to carry them in my gun shop. I got the opportunity to set up a green synthetic, blued action and barrel Turqua model in 6.5 Creedmoor while I was a dealer. I can tell you they are quality that many manufactures could learn a few things from. Five shots into a 1/4" group at 100 yards with Hornady Match ELD-M 140 grain factory loads.

The problem with Turqua is getting them. Barry from North American Hunting Supplies (NAHS), in the Edmonton, Alberta area just sold this business. It was difficult to obtain these Turqua rifles.

I understand the stigma attached to Turkish made firearms, some of them are absolute junk. Canuk brand comes to mind when I say junk. But make no mistake, some Turkish made rifles are built extremely well. Turqua rifles are one of those.

So in answer to your question, those Stevens Model 334 rifles are very nice, built like a tank, reliable, accurate, and have a 60 degree bolt lift. For the price, it cannot be beat. I do not own one. My custom ordered Turqua never materialized, other wise I would have.......:) LOL

Not really. Cabelas has Savage Axis XP packages for like $450 pretty regularly. Pair that with one of the rebates Savage does every year and getting an Axis for ~$400 isn't all that hard.
I've got to keep an eye out for that. Currently here (Nova Scotia), Cabelas has the Axis II XP package on sale... for $599 down from $769 lol. Even used is at least $550 from what I can find.

Yeah, the regular Axis not the Axis II is what you'll get for ~$450. Axis II has the accutrigger, the regular Axis does not. They used to package the Axis II with a different scope than the Axis as well (A Weaver on the II, Bushnell on the regular Axis) but I'm not sure about that these days.
