so, what's everyone use for a low-cost simple way of organizing and carrying ammo to / from the range? i was thinking basic toolbox, but the handle is on the lid so the weight of the ammo might be too much for it. has anyone made their own wooden crate with separate compartments for the various calibers? maybe a milk crate lined with cardboard?

looking for interesting, effective, and CHEAP ideas to store / carry / organize 3-6 different types of ammo.

every so often, Princess Auto sells those surplus ammo boxes for cheap - which would be good if anyone only shot one type of ammo and filled it right up.

I use an ex peanut plastic jar, available at Costco;

1. buy peanuts
2. eat peanuts
3. clean jar
4. fill it with ammo/brass

When I'm hauling several calibers to the range, I throw them in a military canvas tool bag I got years ago. Large enough, heavy duty canvas and the handles wrap under so they won't tear off with the weight.

Sportsman's box at Cabela's sells for under 20 bucks.

These clear instructions really help me visualize the process - :)

What's wrong with the box it came in? I usually throw a couple of boxes of ammo in my range bag and that works for me.

Im just going to be using standard military surplus ammo cans , all the seals are intact , barley any marks they look brand new , and there waterproof to boot , not to worried about the weight . they usually go on sale to for around 14 bucks a pop maybe lower if there damaged visually .

I use Husky Electrician's open tool carrier. You can get them at Home Depot. I can look in and see everything. It has side pockets for tools and stapler and staples, etc.

currently i'm dumping the ammo out of the silly little 50-count boxes and into a plastic Dollarama container that holds anywhere from 250 rounds of .40S&W to 1,000 rounds of 22LR, but then i have a few plastic containers to carry. cheap, but still only a partial solution.

the stuff gets heavy in a hurry, though! :p

For reloaders, extra containers are a necessary expense ;). Also, when buying a crate of surplus ammo, smaller containers can be more convenient for transporting the ammo to the range.

ammo

I use an old cheap briefcase, doesnt look gun related, ammo in plastic boxes, target sheets in paper areas, room for scope and stand, headset hammer wood dowels for squibs and it is a locking case withthe dial numbers. Present one in use over 12 years---Ron.

Most of my guns have never seen factory ammo, I have no factory ammo box so pistol rounds get carried in bulk (I reload them 500 at a time)

Does the more expensive Costco "Kirkland whole fancy Cashews" box make a higher end ammo box or peanuts are fine? R:d:

cashews jars are better of course because the lid is burgundy, I mentionned peanut for the poors.

My "buffalo battle pack" consists of Dollorama container holding a hundred 50/70 Gov rounds . The container even has a handy month dial to verify freshness of packaged ammo:p

ya, currently i'm using Dollarama containers too, the ones that have folding flaps / clips on the lid so that it's kinda secure. different colours too so that i can separate my ammo by caliber. no freshness dial, though :(

hmm, seems that everyone does something different!

interesting idea on the ziploc bags, though. how long do they last before the weight of the ammo shreds them?
