Cheap light beater options

My choice would be one of those husqvarna m96 (m46?) from tradeex. I was going to suggest that for you as well until I read your post about preferring an optic or peep sights. So a sporter enfield would be my next choice. For me, a gun that is handy, slim, light, and portable should avoid an optic.

I think you'd like one of those cheap Stiga from Tradex. Maybe in 30 06?

I got one of those Stigas in 30-06 from Tradex, and after a good cleaning and redoing the stock it's almost too good to be considered a truck gun. I'd go for an SKS instead. Rugged, reliable, cheap if you're not fussy about matching number collectibles, fast loading 5 rounds with stripper clips, cheap ammo, and the chrome barrel means you won't end up with a sewer pipe for a barrel anytime soon.
Just wash the barrel, clean up the gas tube, lightly re-oil and it's good for another sleep until you want to blast away at something.

I will put my vote down for a savage axis. Get a gun smith to add a good set of sights. would walk all over anything mentioned so far.

You think a savage would walk all over an Enfield hahaha!!!
Currently I have a beat up 94. Was a toss up between that and the Lee.

You couldn't pay me to have a savage for rough use.

Sporter no.4 LE, cheapish, accurate, box mag which is a must have in a truck/quad gun as far as I’m concerned. The 150g & 180g commercial ammo will do the trick for most anything. Easy to mount a scope on a no.4 without drilling and tapping, so no need to bubba anything beyond repair than it already is.
