I was out gopher hunting the last 4 nioghts as some of the pasture I rented is absolutely infested, we shot over 200 in about a 50 acre area. Rifles used are a Ruger 77/22 and a Remington 513 Matchmaster(50's era).I thought I had a leftover brick of my standby Reminton Yellow jackets:D , but only found 100 rounds. We were forced to use up 150 rounds of some cheap Federal Wallmart hollowpoints I had stashed in the truck. What garbage:mad:  . hit percentages went down 50% due to erratic accuracy, some had noticeably less power, I had 10 misfires, and over half of the kills crauled into their holes.

What are your go to 22 cal shells?
What are prices in your areas?
Any comments on new brands?
I liked the old PMC zappers as well, I wish I had bought 10 bricks instead of 3

Anyway, my fiance's kids are becoming quite a 10 and 11 year old sniper team

My old 513 matchmaster has put in a good spring already with another 5-600 rounds fired

CCI quik-shoks. I've shot pretty much EVERY kind of HP .22lr at gophers, and the quick-shoks are by FAR the best for instant kills. Small entry wound, no exit wound, and everything inside turned to jam. Same ballistics as the Stinger, just fragments quicker. Shoot very accurately out of my gun.

I had my best luck with CCI MiniMag HP's when gophering. the stingers worked well in close but lacked the splat at long lobs.

Great pics! I would love to find a place to chase gophers again, way to much fun!

Sory about the good lesson - hard learned. Ammo is always the most inexpensive component - never "cheap-out" ... your just askin' for it !!!
Good lookin' kids - having a great time - well done !

x2 for the CCI's ... and no complaints about Power Points either.

i just got off the horn with bashaw Sports, and with Velocitators/hishocks/Stingers at 52$/brick. I will stick with the Yellow Jackets at 26$/per brick, THAT is a great price. Randy said he recieved 26 CASES last week and is down to 6 now. he mentioned that over 10000 rounds of 22 ammo has been sold per DAY out of the shop, thats a lot of gophers.

Bashaw Sports = a great place to hang out(it helps to be next door to the bar)

i've tried a lot of 22 ammo over the years. i like the winchester super X 37 grain hollowpoint the best.

stingers (and the other hyper velocity loads) shoot like sh#t out of my .22, american eagle sucks as well IMO.

I can't use yellow jackets in my rifle, they don't feed right. Running them over my Chrony, they don't hit the advertised speeds, either. (CCI do)

I have found that stingers will only provide decent accuracy in a select few 22's

But are they worth double the money?
Is yours an Auto or boltgun

It's a Savage Mark II BV. Yes, they are worth the money. They're extremely accurate (I can line up a row of 12ga hulls @ 100 yds, and pick at least 9 of them off in 10 shots). They cost a little more, but are still extremely cheap as far as ANY OTHER CALIBRE goes. I can hit what I aim at, and they offer the greatest killing power on gopher-sized targets out of any 22LR I've tried. What's the point in using a cheaper cartridge if I need to shoot twice as many shots to hit what I'm shooting at ;) So, yes, IMHO, they're worth it. As usual, your mileage may vary. Each gun has it's own likes and dislikes.

im surprized at the wee size of the dirt pigs out west....here in ontario we feed them liberal BS.... ;) :p the dirt pigs are huge here... its like you need at least a 30-06 to bag one
