Cheap Slugs - RANGE REPORT 50 yards added

I use a copy of lyman slugs (MP mold) and get 4 inch groups at 50 yards.

I don't roll crimp or fill the base, and use unique powder.

4" would be fantastic for me. Is that a rifled barrel, rifled choke or smooth bore?

What size choke do you find best for slugs?

smooth bore from fabarm stf 12 11" barrel. The choke is called INNER HP, no idea what that means but it works.

The slug mold comes in 2 types, 1 for use with wad and other is for rifled barrels. I have the wad version and works well for me.

Mex matching? Pardon my ignorance

"Mexican match" refers to using manufactured ammo to make reloads, basically. For instance, it is not unheard of for people to take bulk 7.62x39, pull the bullets on a bunch, even out the powder charge, and then seat a better quality bullet into the case. Or in this case, removing the shot from a factory shotshell, and replacing it with a slug to make cheap plinker slug ammo.

Take a dime and stick it in the choke. If it won't go in, it is a Full. If it is a tight fit, a Modified. If it is loose, it is Cyl.

Dime will not go through, I had a quick search and found following about these chokes.

Well, if your best group is with a Full choke, I will try something tighter than Skeet, for sure.

I know from TFE reviews of the stf12 that its designed to work well with slugs but i still can not tell if its full, cylinder or anything else. I suppose its a combination of the shotgun, slug type, powder.

I have shot these same slugs with a mossberg 590 a1, hatsan semi and didnt get the same accuracy.

This was standing, not benched.

Do you think those airgun-pellets-on-steroids slugs will be hard on a full choke?

In my case i have shot 100+ slugs though my stf and have not had any issues. then again fabarm does say its safe to shoot slugs in the stf.

My slugs are .681 to .683 dia

Today I tested my Mexican Match slugs (Lyman 535 gr giant air gun pellet style) at 25 yards.

I shot from a rest with 3 different shotguns (rifled choke, Imp. Cyl. and Modified) in case the gun or choke makes a big difference. It did not. Two of the guns had a rear sight, as behoves an accuracy test. The Rem 870 28" just has a front bead, and groups were as good as the others. Go figure...

For control, I shot 5 Remington Reduced Recoil slugs. These are advertised as 1200 fps, which is in the same ballpark as my ammo -1100 to 1200 fps. My home made slugs felt about the same as the reduced Recoil – much nicer than factory full power slugs. And they cycled through my Hatsan semi-auto just fine.

This test was intended to find out if making Mexican Match slug ammo from target load ammo was a cheap and effective source of good plinker grade slug ammo. It is.

And to determine if the accuracy was good enough. It is. In fact it is as good as or better than the factory slugs. (At 25 yards. I did not test at 50 today, but I will in the future.)

Factory vs. Mexican Match (Mex Match targets are both 3 shots each)

And to determine if filling the skirt of the Lyman slug with wax aided accuracy. It did, but the accuracy of the hollow skirt was plenty good enough. With wax, some 3 shot groups were just one big hole. Without wax, groups were just under 2”. 50 yards might tell a different story.

Conclusion: The Mexican Match slug ammo is best made with the Winchester white box "Super Speed" ammo. Mine was 1 oz 71/2 shot. This size shot cup was perfect to tuck the top rim of the slug under the rolled edge of the crimp. This maintains good pressure on the wad column.

Velocity was about 1220 fps - similar to factory Reduced Recoil. The only tools needed to make these is a knife to cut out the pie crimp and a hammer to pop the slug into place.

Filling the skirts with wax improves accuracy, if needed.

Many thanks to Big Boar who gave me the slugs that made this test possible.

First of all thanks for the intresting post . not to sound stupid but somewhere in the post the use of a full choke barrel with slugs was mentioned ?? from what I have heard for many years was not to fire slugs out of a full choke barrel . Mod or cyl barrel are okay from what I have understood .

maybe someone can shed some light on this . I like the idea of Mex match slugs .
