cheap vs. cheap

I wouldn't call a 340 obsolete, they made them for over 30 years

The fact that they made them for 30 years does not mean that they aren't obsolete.

The fact that they haven't made them for the past 30 years makes them obsolete.

Obviously, buy the gun you like. Surely you can play with and try out both before making your choice. But, as mentioned above, you have quite a bit of time before you will need a deer rifle...and for only slightly more money than either of these guns, you can get something much nicer and more capable.

Another vote for the axis.

The DIY (free) trigger job is a piece of cake and got me down to 3.7 pounds. 7-08 is a far superior round too.

Both guns will hunt, but the axis will offer enough accuaracy to be fun (or at least not frustrating) at the range too.

Next up ..... "What's a good pointed stick?" thread.

Beech, tempered in an alder fire.

Lol....... I was going to go with ironwood based on what it does on my chainsaws..... :)

I don't mean to come off as a snob here, OP...... but you're asking for a light rifle solution glassed on a $300 budget...... you are chasing a unicorn......

Kidding aside wen I was young it realy didn't matter what rifle I hunted as I did not have the money to be fussy and use what I was able to afford at the time
Ther was no I don't like this and I don't like that it just had to work wen I pulled the trigger everything before and after was on me and not the rifle

not really, as some people that responded to this thread did not read what was the original thread " which would you pick ", I can get the 340 for $250 or the axis for $325

Since you are on a really tight budget and both will work get the savage. But personally I'd probably scrounge up the extra for the axis. 7-08 is a great round.
