cheap vs. cheap

Will he let you take both rifles out and shoot them? It's likely that the fit and feel of each rifle is different for you. Calibre and make doesn't matter if it doesn't fit.
I have the Savage 340 ( OK, actually the CIL version but same thing ) which I bought for a fun rifle, truck gun, loaner, whatever. It cost me $275 including a mounted scope.
Easy to carry, cheap to shoot ( both reloading or factory made ). Nice feature is the iron sights and the flip to the side scope mount. Used it last season for my Son-In-Law to use for his Initiation Hunting.
Limited in ammo choices unless you reload which is easy and cheap, parts hard to find if needed. The trigger, well it's a 60 year old rifle.
Basically a 100 yard max rifle but that seems to be what you want.
Son has an Axis albeit in 270. Solid, reliable, lots of upgrades available if needed and is a great shooter. Has the "Package" scope on it but it's worked well for him over the last 4 years and he is very hard on stuff. I've shot it, like it.
As I, and Son-In-Law are lefties, went out and picked up a used Axis lefty in 30-06 for $275 or so. Would think it was new. Added a new Vortex Crossfire II and rings. Haven't shot it but feels good, cycles smoothly and the scope is very clear. This will be Son-In-Law's rifle once he gets his CORE done and will be my backup rifle.
Have never shot a 7mm-08 but understand it is low recoil while retaining "big game" capabilities. I'd suggest that it would be capable at distances and size of game somewhat greater than the 30-30.
Personally, I'd go with the Axis, it's more versatile, easy to upgrade if desired, a bit better calibre ( others might disagree ) but more expensive to shoot. Add in that it's going to be a 60 year newer rifle with parts availability and to me at least it's a no brainer.
Now, having said that, if I'm out walking in the bush with the mutts and I just want a nice rifle to carry the 30-30 comes out.

YAHOO!!!!!!! so after trading this and that and doing some welding for a buddy of mine I landed a Remington 700 bdl in 7mm-08, all problems are solved and it came with a weaver 4x scope

That is why I always recommend not cheaping out....... while it could be read as snobbery, the fact is that when in a bind, there is always a way if you exercise some creativity.....

That's a solid serviceable deer rig..... good job.....

thanks, between my 7mm-08 and my tikka t3 in 204 ruger and my cil 28ga I think I have new Brunswick covered, at least what I hunt, might look for a bigger rifle if I get my moose tag
