Cheap way to shoot skeet?

I really want to shoot skeet, but I was wondering if there was a reasonably priced way of doing so? I currently shoot .22s and an SKS, so I was looking for something that was a little different but doesn't cost too much more per round/shell.

What are some of the cheapest shells/loads to go for when shooting skeet? I've also looked for pricing on clay pigeons but I haven't been able to find anything in canadian prices :S

You use 2 3/4 skeet or target loads, cost about $70 buck on a case of 250 shells, and 500 clays cost about $16 bucks at any gun store. Then go get yourself a long barrel shot gun, min 26-28" long. You can get a cheap skeet thrower for $15 bucks and have a friend throw them
 
I live in Kitchener, ON, but my range is in Elmira. A great range minus the fact they only have 1 thrower, and it's in front of the firing line on the 100 yard...

Is that type of shell a common one you can find in most stores?
 
Just go to any gun store and ask for "target load shells 2 3/4" shells," they will bring them to you if your unsure and just ask them for clay skeets box and that's the easiest way to start off.
 
Where you are matters.
"...decide between..." Buy either based on the price. Those two are very close to the same thing. You can either buy a Skeet/Trap barrel or just a choke tube for either. The M500 will need tubes installed though.
"...find anything in Canadian prices..." Look on Canadian sites.
 
I just bought 2 flats of Remington Gun Club Target Loads (12 gauge, #7.5, 2-3/4") for $55/flat. That works out to about 25 cents a shell after tax.

500 clays for $15? wow......sure you don't mean 135 clays?

Sweet pricing, here it's always about $70/250 light target loads.

I thought so too... that's why I got 2 flats. They had Federal Top Gun target loads for $62 or $64 /flat. I just wanted the cheapest... I have yet to see how they perform though.



As for clays... Canadian Tire can order them for you. Looks like 135 clays for $19.99.
 
Just curious where you are buying 500 for $16.00. The cheapest I have found was $17.00 for 135. Ditto on buying a manual thrower and getting a friend to throw. I'm teaching my kids how to throw.

I have a manual tosser and it works great. I even have gotten pretty good at tossing them myself before taking the shot. I usually hit 4/5 clays using a Cooey Model 84 full choke.

I thought about getting a pump action, but I prefer the 'do or die' single shot only with the Cooey.
 
If cost is an issue, look at the Mossberg maverick 88. It's pretty much a Mossberg 500 with cheaper parts and a much lower price tag. I have over 500 rounds through mine personally(got it used), and it's never failed to fire, eject, or cycle. It uses the Mossberg chokes and includes a modified with the gun. No need to buy additional chokes when first getting into it for cheap.

The target shells typically are also the cheapest you can buy, so the other option is to go in and say "what is your cheapest shotgun shell?" and you will typically get 2 3/4" either 7-1/2 or 8

Gunpowder is the cheapest two-way thrower I know of. We were absolutely excited when it made shooting easier and more fun. Several attempts were made to make it adjust properly, and once we succeeded, it worked perfectly the entire time.
 
It ain't Skeet if there are not two towers and a half circle layout.
Informal shooting with hand or mechanical throwers is sometimes called "pasture Trap".
