^I agree with MDF. I don't personally care for Remington 597s...but it has more to do with the aesthetics. lol
The answer to the question~Marlin 795 if you want a box mag, Marlin 60 if you want a tube mag. Both very affordable, proper-sized charging handle, last-shot bolt hold open, AND an action release lever. =You don't have to pull back the charging handle on a full mag to chamber the first round. Accuracy is very good, 10 round factory mags reliable/robust, etc. Iron sights tend to be a bit wonky on these guns, but I had always planned to scope mine. All factory semis have heavy-ish triggers...but for the Marlin, look up MCARBO and track down one of their Marlin 795 kits. Affordable, easy to install, and great guys to deal with. Really, the only upgrade I think the gun needs.
