Cheapest .22LR ammo ideas?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if there's a place that sells cheap + good .22LR ammo. I recently went to Wal-Mart to check and left with two bricks of Winchester Xpert (white box) 36-grain hollowpoints for 16.97$/each. I checked out LeBaron's catalogue for the cheapest .22LR bricks and they have the very same brick for $19.72 on 'special', lol!

I have to say, the nice thing about buying ammo at Wal-Mart is that the employee only took a brief look at my license to make sure my pic matched and didn't bother writing anything down or asking any questions. I prefer that to having some 16 year old kid at Canadian Tire writing down all my personal info so that his buddies can attempt a B&E at my place later in the week (due to the now easy to find guns). Had Wal-Mart asked for my personal info, I would've simply refused to give it and left the store with no ammo.

So, do you guys have any suggestions on where to get some cheaply priced .22LR's without having to submit a full C.V. for it? I'm not picky, as long as they go bang and don't dirty the barrel too much... I hear the Winchester Xpert I bought are dirty little things, but that's only after I bought them. Oh well, I'll just have to clean the guns real good after range time, I guess.

Wally Mart also sells the 333 ammo. I find it cleaner and just as good as the hollow points. Cannot really beat the price at less than $10 a box of 333 as it is still cheaper than 2 boxes of Xpert if you buy 3 boxes. They seem to cycle better thru my semi autos too.

why would can tire ask for your info. never had it happen to me

Not sure about Quebec where the original poster is, but in Ontario, thanks to Bob Rae and the 1994 Ammunition Act when buying ammo in Ontario the store is supposed to write down: Name, address, PAL #, date, time, type and quantity of ammo purchased.

You know, to provide criminals a nice "shopping list"

thats ridiculous. hope that doesnt happen in bc.

IIRC it was the result of a typical anti gun governments knee jerk over reaction in response to Toronto Police officer Todd Bayliss being shot and killed (and his partner injured) in the line of duty.

Now, I don't know what would happen if someone in Ontario bought ammo online (or in person) from a business in a province like Alberta, that doesn't have such a requirement. Would the Ontario residents personal and purchase info be taken and recorded somewhere along the way?

Well, online/telephone purchase would, in most cases, require you to give the businees you are dealing with your name, address and (R)PAL number no matter where you are from.

Well, I've been told by a few people around here that some stores have taken it upon themselves to have a log of all public ammo sales. This can go from writing down your name and PAL# to requesting your address and phone number as well. Some others do not follow this stupidity though, especially after some of the local shooting community started boycotting them.

I was told that this is the case with Canadian Tire stores... I don't know which ones specifically, as I have never bought ammo there - I usually buy it at LeBaron or (lately) at the range. Besides, last time I checked my local CT had less ammo in stock than I do at home... just a few mangled/ripped boxes on the shelves behind glass and mostly 12 GA. The only .22LR I saw there was CCI Blazer at $2.99 per box of 50 (and there was like 3 boxes in total). :p

So anyway, going back to the initial question... so it looks like the cheapest we can get is still at Wal-Mart with the 333 unit box, is that correct? If so, then it looks like I may become a more frequent shopper there, lol...

Well yeah, thats a given.

But I was refering to them having to record date, time, type and quantity purchased because the person is ordering from Ontario.

yup, they are required by law to write it down here in Ontario....

BTW, Cheap and good cannot be used together in a sentence before "Ammo" or you will be lying:rolleyes:

ammo and componant prices seem to be going up and up........

Don't remember where, but I read an article saying Winchester was expecting a 15 - 20% increase in ammo prices this year.

I know, for example, at Le Baron the Winchester 9mm Value Packs have gone from just over $24.00 in the fall to almost $28.00 now. That's about 14%, so it's inline with what Winchester said.

I guess time has come for me to get a press and learn to reload... and to stop asking dumb questions!

Lol... :p

Picked up some Dynapoints at Walmart today for $20.30 total with tax.
Xperts were there for a couple bucks less.
...then I went to the range...
Going back to Walmart again tomorrow.
