cheapest 30-06 or 308 rifle

stevens 200, savage axis, Mossberg, Remmy 770 (yuck), Marlin, NEF Handi... all can be had for between $300 and $400. Personally, I'd go with the stevens

Marlin XL7 destroys the competition for $350.

I have owned 2 Stevens 200's and they are great, but for a little extra the Marlin has a better stock, better recoil pad, better trigger, and includes a 1 piece base.

The cheapest is for sure the Remmy 770 maybe not in price by a few buck but certainly in fabrication... JP.

X2. I owned a Marlin and it was not only a great rifle, but it was the best rifle for the money I have ever encountered other than buying a good used gun. Should have kept it. :(

don't buy cheap ####e! it ain't worth it! you'll kick your own hiney, (oh yeah, it can be done) trust me! buy good used at a fair price and or there are even some great bargains out there! ;)

I'm glad I saw this thread as I'm looking for something along the same lines for my wife as her first hunting rifle to celebrate her getting her hunter#. :)

What he said!

I have to say that there aren't many cheap rifles I would even consider owning, but if you move up to the $500 price range (STILL CHEAP), there's a much better selection of mildly used quality firearms. Cheap guns are like a cheap hooker, once you're done handling them, you want them gone !!

BTW, the only "cheap" guns that I would own are an SKS or a Mosin. Wrong calibres, I know, but a great deal nonetheless.

My friend hunts with a Marlin XL7 and I think it's a fine firearm. If I was buying a dedicated hunting rifle in those calibre's I'd highly consider one of those. But I'm partial to the detachable mag versions of the 700 for not much more money.

I'd rather buy a good used rifle than some new piece of crap. For $400-$500 you can find a nice used Winchester or older Remington that will be twice the gun. If you want to spend less there are some nice BSA's, Huskvarna's or Mauser 98's that come up from time to time. Just sayin'.
