Cheapest .30 caliber or bigger rifle cartridge?

Absolutely cheapest hunting ammo is 30-30 at around $17 per 20, based on the big box stores. For about another three bucks per 20, you get into 308, 30-06, 303 British and a few more. 30-30 will work fine on deer, but is not nearly as much of an all around cartridge as the 30-06 or 308 (if you're planning on hunting other things, or at longer ranges...).

Reload then you don't have to worry about such things.
Yep, 50 to 60 cents per reload depending on the options and for any but the most oddball calibers. And you can achieve better control on the charge weights for even more accuracy. Not to mention playing with the overall length to suit your rifle and achieve better accuracy.
agreed on the reloading thing, but otherwise a 30-30 or .303 british. you can buy a nice marlin 336 in 30-30 for $300-$500 and 20 cartridges for $18-$25, or an enfield sporter if you're willing to sort through the $hitty ones for $100-$300 and 20 cartridges for $22-$30.
if you could find a nice parker hale or churchill sportered enfield i'd say go with that. it'll give you more range than the 30-30 and it's better suited for bigger game if you should hapen to pull a moose tag.

Read this ^^^ .308 is short action, 30-06 is long, pick one that you like the most. Savage makes very sensible and accurate rifles in both calibers. Both will drop from bamby to a moose.

Yeah, but I like these thought experiments.
The idea was that if ammo is cheap one would practice a bit more.

Saw a box of 180 gr 308 Winchester power points here at the Northern today for $46 a box. Thank God I handload!

Personally I prefer the .270 win for everything from coyotes to moose. God damn caliber restrictions. LOL. But really Id go 30-30 and reload with some lead bullets. Im reloading them now for about 30 cents a round!!!!!!

Excluding 7.62x39, .308 is the winner here. While it might be a buck or so more then .3030 for soft point hunting ammo, you can easily find FMJs in the $12-13 dollar range, and might luck into milsurp FMJ for even cheaper.

Except anything ending in "magnum".
Apparently, "magnum" attached to a caliber means the manufacturers can charge an extra 30-60% on the reload-bits.
What are the caliber restrictions?
if you wanna factor in rifle cost a 303 will run ya 125$. so a savings of over $100 over a 30-30 and $200 over a 30-06 or 308. so once you figure out those savings 3030brit is the way to go on the cheap.
lots of cheap buddies that would rather spend money on beer for hunting still use a 303 with irons and still bag more game than me. not to mention that half #### safety is so cool.
