John Sukey said:Lots of times, it was not water returned to the cooling jacket, and you wouldn't want tea from it.. Had an uncle in WW1 who in letters to my father said "you hated the smell from the Vickers,, but they sure made you feel more secure. Now for a noob question... how does the water cooling work (if it wasn't dewat)
How it works.
After firing several belts, the water in the jacket turns to steam. Steam travels through hose to the can where it condenses back into water.
two options then.
1. pour water back into barrel jacket or
2. top up water jacket.
Contrary to popular belief the water IS NOT pumped back into the gun.AND you CANNOT use the hot water to brew up your tea (unless you like grease in it)![]()
Had two different T&T MG wounds, was gassed, sent to England to recoup, worked at of a division of Vickers MG school then was courtmartialed at Seaforth England before coming home.. died 1926. Was always a "loose cannon" but thats where you get hero's, cause they don't GiveA$hit.
