I've been using a Cooey 64B (which is a predecessor to the savage 64) for the last little while which is turning out to be a fairly accurate/reliable semi. At $100 in near-mint condition it was a good buy for my first .22 I have not tried the others so I cannot comment on them, though I am certain you will find that people have found strengths in each of those you listed.

My only gripe with my 64 is the poor fit of the reciever in the stock, though I would think that problem would have been solved years ago.

Save a couple more bucks and get a 10/22. When I was shopping for cheap semi-auto's I was only looking at similar models as you. The gunshop sold me on the Ruger's reliability and availability of aftermarket parts. If you don't want a 10/22, the Marlin 7000 (number?) series gets good reviews and as far as I know, it's just a heavy barrel version of the 795 so that would be my choice of the 3. The Remington 597 gets mixed reviews.

I own a 795. It's a great gun for the money. I only have about 1000 rounds through her, but I've had no problems. It is a lite gun, easy to carry in the gopher patch all day. Put a 3-9x32 Bushnell on it for $45.00, best $200 I've spent in a while. Get the Marlin, you'll enjoy it.

P.S> If you aren't going to hunt/carry with the rifle very much, and mostly target shoot, look at te 7000, as the poster above states. Same gun with a heavy barrel. Also a friend just got a Savage 64...nice .22LR for the money too!

a 10/22 will be quite a bit more than 160 though. $250 for the gun (plus tax) and $100 or more for a decent barrel.

from what ive read, stock 10/22's suck nuts for accuracy but a GM barrel can fix that. for what it would cost to get a 10/22 and a barrel you could buy 2 of the 3 guns listed for less...

Man...time to jump on the soapbox......10/22's are GARBAGE!
Seriously.....they are the Honda-civic-with-a-big-ass-can-hanging-off-the-back of the firearms world!

Out of the box, they are inaccurate, overpriced, and fugly.

Yes, you can make them accrate and very pretty......but it will cost you a ton of $$ to make it happen. Why not just spend the money up front on a TC or something decent?

I know--I know---"I can personalize it". Good for you! However, the 10/22 is just a cash cow for the aftermarket.

There is a ton of aftermarket parts for them....but that's because they are NECCESSARY.

Holy ####...you can buy a Hyundai Pony and if you sink enough money into it make it a decent car....but why bother? Why not buy something decent to begin with?

I just cant figure it out.........

10-22 sucks big time. No last shot bolt hold open. mag release lever sucks. bolt release lever sucks. poor accuracy, ammo sensitive. Some of you may have luck to buy a trouble free one but some may not. I have had one and sold it quick. Anyhow I think the Marlin 795 is a good buy.

The title of the topic is: "Cheapest semi-auto?"

In my opinion, the cheapest semi-auto would be the one that will reliably cycle the cheapest ammunition available.

No point in buying a $ 150 rifle that you will have to feed relatively expensive ammo (like CCI).

I don't have experience with the firearms you have mentioned. However, someone told me that the Remington does not do well with the cheap ammo...

I also have a savage 64/ cooey 64 and so far I really pleased with it.
I agree about the poor fit with the reciever in the stock, but nothing a little bit of epoxy putty and a couple hours couldn't fix, also I noticed a few points where the stock was rubbing the barrel slightly so I fixed that also.
Now that I've done that I've noticed better performance from the Savage 64 shooting close to 100 yrds.

Like I said so far I'm pleased with it, I felt that these issues where easy and simple enough for me to deal with, and I'd still recommend it.

I chose the 795. awesome gun! Very Very Accurate, light weight, feeds very
well especially with the cheap ammo. Locks back when empty and the controls are very easy to use. Also has a magazine saftey. Wont fire without.
Fine gun for hunting, plinking. Dynamite with a scope. I used to nail grasshoppers at the range shooting benchrest.

I sold it though and bought a 10/22 international. Its not nearly as accurate and lacks the last shot open. Ruger is fine to dry fire so it doesnt matter.
I always wanted one. Hop up parts and mags are great but very costly.
Cant comment on the other two but the other RF

My other one is a rem 552 speedmaster. Lefthanded action, bolt so you can rack with the weak hand, 15 round tube fed. Accurate. 15 round cap.

One more thing Like i said i have a tube and a clip fed. If you are buying it to plink a lot buy a tube fed. loading magazines can be a bit of a drag if you are doing it for long periods. Open the tube slide in 15 and done. 10 seconds.
If you like that idea buy a marlin model 60. Under 200 and exactly the same as the 795 but tube. only complaint i have with the marlin.. the triggers ar a little more stiff than i prefer. My buddy didnt mind though.
Good luck with your choice. Any thing else you want to know on marlins..etc

One more major thing about cheap semis. Always buy new! unless its a ruger i suppose.
Ive watched a friend buy 3 used ones so far.. None are working well except the marlin
i sold him.
PM me.

Yeah I asked for the cheapest since I don't have lots of $.
I was supposed to get a Lee Enfield in great shape for 60$, and sell it after for 110-125$ but I wasn't fast enought.

I would prefer a semi and something accurate, as I would probable scope it and have fun with the gf at the range after a .22 pistol session.
She have bad eyes so she suck a bit on open sight. I could buy a cheap reddot...

The marlin look like a great choice, I'll probably try to save for one.

Walk into any gunstore and look at the used .22s on the racks looking for homes...I'm sure most if not all will outshoot a 10/22 for less then $100.00. :)

Anyone who want's to buy a Rugar should read this first...
"No honest man needs more than 10 rounds in any gun."

"I never meant for simple civilians to have my 20 or 30 round magazines or my folding stock."

"I see nothing wrong with waiting periods."
-William B. Ruger, Senior, in an interview with NBC News' Tom Brokaw.

And out of the three you listed I'd go for the Marlin Model 795. :)
