If you want to compete with the Glock, a 17C will put you in Open class (no good), and a G34 will put you in Standard, but you'll be stuck in Minor.
A G35 would be a better choice because you can shoot either Major or Minor with .40 and also get a 9mm conversion barrel for practice.
A G17 is a competent Production pistol.

Not sure if i am really into the competition thing yet, so far its just some homemade metal targets and splattering paper zombies. Something to kill a Saturday afternoon with my wife and my Dad.

You should try a MP before you buy the Glock, I'd go with 9mm for your wallet.

Another vote for the M&P but go with .40 for stopping power.
