Looks like a spent cese of ammo designed for silent discharge.
Russians had it designed that way, case still contains pressurized gas when ejected.

it fires a waxy pellet, uses a special upper or conversion kit that is visibly different from an upper that will shoot real ammo, pressure makes the case open up like that to cycle the action

yes 5.56mm simunition

basically really small paintballs that hurt.

you use a different bolt but your regular upper

if you look you will see that the rim is slightly smaller then a normal 5.56 round its designed this way so that if you somehow get a 5.56 ball mixed in with the simunition it won't chamber.

the aluminum piston provides the dwell time as the simunition bolt does not lock up

also comes in 9mm
