Where can a person find checkering tools in Canada? Or is that too much to ask?
Midway USA will not ship to Canada, on another source I found, they were way overpriced.
I have found one reasonably priced source in the UK that will ship to Canada, so I may go that route. Can’t find anything on the used market.

Ya, Good luck with that....

Been on the search for replacement cutter heads, as I was down to my last straight single.
Ended up order a few carbide SS RH/LH from Ullman Precision. OUCH !!! (OH YA duty, HST and PST too)
Then I found a shop in the UK just for some RH/LH Cutters with tracer, but their selection was very limited.
Sure hope the carbide cutters work out... had to give up my left nut for that order!

There is a bunch of Dembart checkering tools and spare cutters as well as chisels etc coming up for auction in February.

You won’t be disappointed. The Ullman carbide cutters I use have outlasted the others 2-3x and are still cutting like new. Their clear view handle is a great addition to the tools as well I found.

I use to order dem Bart cutters from KV woodcarving in Canada but not sure if they still stock checkering stuff.

Got an email from KV earlier this month, she does not have any more dem Bart.
As stated above, a shop in the UK had some cutters with tracer heads, which I really like to use.
When I started on the Chiappa Bandit, I used my last new F1 dem Bart straight cutter, which is still cutting like new.
So these new Ullman should last a very long time.
I talked to Ullman before I ordered, ask if his heads would fit the dem Bart handles, even if I had to do a little mod'ing.
Since I have lots of dem Bart "clear view" handles... he said no. Haven't really looked if they would work or not.

Although it would be nice, I could not justify the cost of getting into a power head unit. ($2000-$4000) before tax etc.

As stated you wont regret buying Micheals carbide tools. If you eventually decide to step up and buy the power unit once again you wont be dissappointed. I have been using mine for a few years now and I can tell you the power unit has significantly shortened my layout time. If you are just wanted to checker the odd stock the hand tools are excellent but if you plan to make some money the power unit will be a great investment.

Its great seeing people still interested in this part of the gun trade/market. Good luck and enjoy

If you don’t mind me asking, which power tool did you go with?
And if you had to do it over again would you change anything?

I bought the fore runner to Micheals titan. J and E engineering is who Micheal bought his tooling from and when my unit came up for sale I purchased it. Micheal told me the titan parts would be interchangable if I ever needed service on the unit.

I am very happy with it and cant imagine checkering without it. I use it for inital lay out and then the second pass. After that I use his carbide tools. For the casual user the power tool is likely not necessary but the hand tools are next level compared to the dembart. What I can say is if you decide to buy one and commit to checkering I think you will find out in short order it is your an enormous time saver.

No matter what you decide enjoy and good luck!!
