Thought I'd ask here before spending 100+

Does anyone have experience gas checking plain base through a lee sizer. Does it have to be done base first or can it be done point first.
I have a great NOE HTC 225 and was thinking of buying a Patmarlin checkmaker.
Thanks

I dont think there is anyway to check that bullet. There is no shank for the check to seat on.

Others my chime in but Im thinking no go

You may also want to check down afew threads on the pat marlin check maker as well. I have not dealt with them but.......

If you have straight wall cases or don't seat the bullet deeper than the neck you can always use cardboard. Some have even suggested wax as a check.

Have you tried powder or lacquer coating? It works very well. I was given some to try out and now will be doing my own. The coating has eliminated all leading and I can increase velocities. Do a search or just look back in the threads. There are some very knowledgeable people that can walk you through it.

Yes I already PC thanks.
I'm able to push these to about 1900 when PCed.
It may just be time for another mold.
Darn EH?

Why not buy a sample pack of plain base checks from Sage Outdoors? James Sage ships fast and has great products and customer service. I have not tried plain base checks but plenty of testimony over at cast book it's shows they work... Not quite as good as full thickness gas checks for bullets with a GC shank but certainly good for a few 100 fps more than unchecked anyway.

James is great
He even sent me a free sample. Unfortunately they were just 243 checks and wouldn't centre properly.
I actualy sat down last night and punched some 5/8 pop can checks. Went out 5 min ago and they worked great. I glued the bullet centered and then ran them reverse through my sizer. The thin aluminum went through beauty. I ran a min load and had 2" accuracy.

What diameter bullet are you talking about?

Sorry I missed your answer somehow a week ago.

I find that very interesting. a .625 dia disk would fold up the bullet shank far enough to be almost considered a "jacket" rather than gas check LOL. It must wrinkle up a fair amount on the side of the bullet, embedding and deforming the bullet somewhat but you can't argue with the results, I consider 2 " with any cast as acceptable.

With a .625 disc on a .225 bullet you sure wouldn't have the problems I have with my .565 dia disc's (cutter made from a set of plans on Castboolits) on a .458 PB bullet, some stay on quite well others slip of easily so I quit using them (afraid of them coming off part way down and stopping in the bore). They totaly will not stay on a bullet with any bevel to the base at all.

I'm still having issues as the barrel heats up. After about 15 shots accuracygoes out the. If I let it cool completely I'm good for another 15.
