So I am trying to build a custom ruger 1022. Regarding the barrel installation, do I need to have a guage to check the headspace? Any input would me helpful thx. Ed

Basically the barrel should be chambered until the rim of the reamer just touches lightly... with a "Benz" minimum chambering reamer for semi autos.

This allows the recess for the rim of the case that is cut in the bolt to do it's part.

If you try and make it any tighter you will have misfires as the bolt will fail to close properly.

The rim cut in the bolt is required so it does not slam fire.

It sounds like a pre-made barrel, yes? If so, just bolt it on. Like Dennis said, the bolt is headspaced already, and just has to slam against the barrel.

"...bolt is headspaced..." A bolt doesn't get headspaced. The rifle does. Mind you, headspace isn't as big a deal with a .22, dangerwise. If you want the guages, Brownell's sells 'em. Not exactly cheap at $30US each though.
